Re: what software are you using? late 2017 edition
Sometimes I wonder if the people here are a little bit genius, or a little bit mad. I think that, if you are a little bit genius then you may also be a little bit mad, therefore, probably, it is both, I think. I actually used my Amiga 4000 quite a bit when developing Driar. All the graphics are mad...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
Shadow of the Beast was one of the first games that really showed of the capabilities of the Amiga hardware with lots of colors on the screen (thanks to the copper) and huge sprites (thanks to the blitter) and lots of parallax scrolling. The music was great aswell. The game was hugely popular in the...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
Has anyone of you seen this ? I couldn't find a video of it but the D64 can easily be run in VICE. It's a lot of NES tunes played on the SID, and most of them sounds amazingly like the real thing. I also found this very cool SID like Famicom version of the music from Cybernoid on the C64, also very ...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
About prices. Here in Sweden you could buy "budget" C64 games on cassette tape for about 50 SEK (about 7 USD in todays exchange rate) during the late eighties/early ninethies, "full price" games cost about 100-250SEK when I looked in a 1990:s computer magazine. NES/SMS games was ...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
You can expand sprites in X, Y or both directions, so you can actually fill the entire screen and a little more with sprites, very pixly sprites but still!
I found this video that shows off a few games that has some huge sprites

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
Here's my take on Shantae. http://driar.se/pic/nes/shantae.png Once again, there are loads and loads of room for improvements on this one, it was all fairly quickly thrown together just to get a sense of how it could look. All "grass" had to be done using with the "brownish" pale...

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
Wow, some great posts here since I last posted, that Batman mockup looks really great, gonna try it on my PAL NES and take a picture if I can just find my CF-reader, so I can copy it to my PowerPak. That rogue-like looks like a game I want to play aswell! Speaking of that and going a little off-topi...

Re: The NES vs. its contemporary competition
Having done some coding for the C64 I felt I would chime in here. One huge advantage the NES has over something like the C64 is how cheap scrolling is. On the C64 you could only scroll 7 pixels and then you needed to reset the scroll and move all the tiles. The VIC allowed the adress to "Screen...

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
I looked at Shantae and judging by the pictures I looked at, it would be very hard to make a decent looking NES mockup of it, because of the NES 16x16 attributes.

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
Looks great! I'd only tweak the colors a bit so that Link doesn't blend so much with the background... Two of his colors are also present in the main background palette, so he ends up looking like part of it. That's a good point, I drew the sprite separately and just cut and pasted it onto the back...

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
My take on Zelda III. Settled for a quite bright palette in the end. Uses quite a lot of dithering.

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
Hmm, then what about NES-ifying the SMS port? The only thing the SMS has over the NES is color depth, so some graphics would have to be simplified so that they can work and not flicker too bad. The SMS game flickers a LOT as it is. I was thinking about using the SMS version as a basis for the sprit...

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms
Since you asked before for requests, if you don't mind, I'd like to see how R-Type would look like on the NES. This is what I came up with, and it was sort of a pain. I cheated a bit, the ground is less varied than it is in the arcade version and some things are a bit squeezed down. http://driar.se...
