Re: Witch n' Wiz - Puzzle Platformer

Life after NESDev Compo 2020/21 It’s be a little over a month since Witch n’ Wiz was submitted to the NESDev compo, and work hasn’t slowed down since! The build submitted for the compo was just a small slice of what I hope to deliver in the final game, so now might be a good time to show how the ga...

The competition results are in and Witch n' Wiz has been awarded 2nd place!

Thanks to everyone who played, especially the Beta Testers who really help shave off some rough edges.

Re: NES lookalike graphics

Looks nice. I like the sprites a lot. Once you put it all together, it gets quite "noisy" though. I think I would reduce the amount of sharp contrast in the background. I find looking at OG GameBoy games for really good examples of how to clearly distinguish foreground from background. Warioland in ...

Nice puzzle platform game everything from graphics to sound is amazing.
But i had some glitch in FCEUX emulator, but later i switched to Mesen so it worked fine there.
It requires FCEUX 2.3+ (You were on 2.2). Thanks for going the extra mile to find a working emulator though!

Re: Witch n' Wiz - Puzzle Platformer

Now that the 2020/21 nesdev compo is done, I figured it is time to start an official thread for my current project: Witch n' Wiz.

I'll try to post here when I make major progress, but generally I do much more frequent updates on Twitter and Discord (links in Top Post).

Re: Need some help using Famitile

I very new to developing for the NES (like, been learning it for two days new), and I need some help with Famitile. Specifically I can't figure out how to save (I'm using the graphical one "vfamitile.exe"), but a general readme would be nice since it doesn't come with one. Not to side-step the ques...

Re: Witch n' Wiz - Puzzle Platformer [COMPLETE]

I recorded a full playthrough of the game in case anyone gets really stuck:

It also doubles as an official first (I think) speed run of the game, clocking in at 6m14s.

Re: PPU Palette Mapping (NES to Vs. System)

I think you want this: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?p=93718#p93718 (it should use the same as Castlevania I believe) No that didn't work at all. However I think I've figured out the palettestuff pretty ok now. If I could figure out how to get "VS Wrecking Crew" to run in DualSystem-mode i...

Re: Debug Dualsystem ROMs?

There are two problems here, Mesen won't load my Mapper99 files so I can't edit it's header. There must be more to it, since as you can see, I am loading a Mapper 99 rom in that screenshot. I've attached the ROM if you want to try that out (maybe we have different versions of Mesen). Assuming this ...

Re: Published first game - what next?

When I do my coding in 6502 assembly it feels like more fun than any other language I used so far, but also takes longer. You could probably attribute it to my short practice with the language, but I really wonder how do people prefer to create games for NES? I did some C coding about 10y ago in co...

Re: C compiler requests

What are your preferred mappers or memory layouts? * NROM, MMC1 What are your preferred emulators? * Mesen mostly, and a little FCEUX. What's your development pipeline? * Write code in VSCode, compile with CC65/CA65 via batch scripts (in VSCode), debug in Mesen with C source code. Anything that you...

Re: Debug Dualsystem ROMs?

Is there a way of debugging dualsystem ROMs with “two screens”? “Mesen” doesn’t seem to like Dualsystem ROMs but is there another way? Mesen does support it. You need to make sure the rom header is set up properly. However, when I attempted to use the shared RAM in my game, Mesen crashes. I suspect...
