Hmm, I forgot to add the necessary MAPROUT.BIN file in the archive. Please retry with the new attachment. ...and always perform a defragmentation operation on your SD card after update. EDIT: Of course, maybe I should mention that this mapper only produces audio on Famicom or modified NES consoles. ...

Re: Everdrive N8 - VRC7 Mapper with FM Sound
Hello together, since this forum here is for HW hacks and retro developers, this big update might interest you! ...there is now a fix in inaccuracy in the modulator envelope generator!!! ... Hmm... No, that's not it... :) Well, how about the fact that the mapper now implements a full Yamaha YM2413 c...

Re: Why only 52 colors instead of 256?
I grew up with a PC and a Playstation 1, but the NES graphics are no problem to me, even in the earliest games. Sure they might not look great but they didn't directly interfere with the development of games. 2600 graphics did. I think if there is one system whose graphics capabilities haven't aged...

Re: Everdrive N8 - VRC7 Mapper with FM Sound
In case anyone is still interested, here is an update:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=316 ... 5103436729
- Envelope trigger bug fixed
- Reduced core size by 13%
- Audio volume of FM now matches APU level (at the expense of losing dynamic range for FM)
VRC7 should be now feature complete.

Hi,
I have uploaded a new test version:

Changes so far:
- Increased Volume
- Added a missing FM feature which nobody seems to have noticed so far...

Re: Everdrive N8 - VRC7 Mapper with FM Sound
Very Well. BTW, Is it possible to simulate VRC7 FC Sound with a altera or xilinx cpld? The EverDrive N8 uses an Altera Cyclone II FPGA, but FPGAs are much more capable devices than CPLDs. My core is currently using 2910 LEs, which is beyond the capacity of any known "real" CPLD. Especially if you t...

Re: Everdrive N8 - VRC7 Mapper with FM Sound
Hi, The VRC7 board attenuates the 2A03 audio quite a bit. In that video it's balanced way too loud relatively, though probably you're going to have trouble getting loud enough output from the Everdrive to do it right. There's some reference recordings here: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?t=8...

Everdrive N8 - VRC7 Mapper with FM Sound (now full YM2413!)
Hello guys, I just finished a new release of my VRC7 mapper implementation for the Everdrive N8. After some long hiatus, I finally managed to get the VRC7 /FM sound core running reasonably well! :D I have uploaded the release to the following location: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=1435...

I'm also curious, does the dual moniter playchoice use the same ppu for both screens? I wasn't able to find a closeup picture of the pcb anywhere but from what I saw it looked like there's only just 1 rgb nes ppu on the dual moniter pcb. The second video generator is made completely from TTL chips,...

Also, I have noticed thato n MD1 the PCM is much more noisy than on MD2. So I guess there is a design flaw somewhere.... ? As far as I know, the MD2 has an integrated chipset which merges the YM2612 with the VDP, so chances are high that they reworked the chip design. I never had a MD2, so unfortun...

The discrete YM2612 chip used in MD1 has a 9bit DAC. The one used inside MD2 ASIC seems to have more than 10bits, but not above 12bits. The quantization noise is much lower on MD2 than it is on MD1. I am somehow not convinced that the noise is generated by the 9 Bit DAC. I have the feeling that the...

Games like Blaster Master and Faxanadu look better on an NTSC TV than on a PlayChoice; this helped popularize NTSC TV emulation in emulators such as Nestopia. Tunes exploiting nontrivial quirks of the BRR decoder for noise generation did the same for SNES DSP emulation. So if we want to popularize ...

I'm wondering if I can find a comparison between a real YM2612 and emulation. Something that would make the difference obvious like using really high frequencies. Youtube is okay if that is all you can find. The biggest difference between an original YM2612 and a very good emulator, like KEGA, is t...

I'd have thought that the Atari's frame length was a multiple of CPU clocks, so that you could have pixels appear at the same position each frame. I don't remember them shaking, but it was about 6 years ago that I last had a 2600. Each line on the Atari VCS is 228 cycles long at 3.58 Mhz video cloc...

If you consider "well explored" as in using hacked on hardware special effects just to make use of hacked on hardware special effects, then I agree it was well explored. But if you consider "well explored" as in programming original special effects through creative use of hacked on hardware special...
