Fixing Metroid NES RNG by using FDS RNG

So I decided to see if I could fix the RNG (Random Number Generator) in Metroid NES. It's one of those things I noticed as a kid playing the game. In Norfair the seahorses would sometimes shoot fire, and othertimes would not. Also the hoppers in Ridley or Kraid's lair would either do long jumps or s...

Re: Sony/Nintendo Playstation Prototype

More details: http://www.engadget.com/2015/11/06/nintendo-playstation-is-real-and-it-works/ BIOS works as does the test cartridge. Hopefully BIOS and test cart eventually get dumped. Neat stuff, not sure if there are any additional helper chips (ala Super FX), or if it's just a SNES with a CD-ROM dr...

Beyond the Forbidden Forest (C64)

Holy crap, that game would scare the hell out of me. I could barely play it, and it was hard as hell too.

Re: Need help with where to get started in NES Dev

I think tepples understands exactly what I want to do. Sorry if I wasn't able to clearly convey what I'd like to do. I understand the game will have to be re-written twice. It's just to make the learning process easier. I've written games before in high level languages Java/Python/ObjC from scratch ...

Need help with where to get started in NES Dev

So I'm finally looking to work on a NES game, but I'd like to prototype it in a higher level language first. I really see this as 2 parts - 1) writing larger side 6502 programs 2) know the PPU inside and out My 6502 assembly language skills aren't that great, so I was thinking... Wouldn't it be neat...

Re: You opinion on Eclipse IDE

I use eclipse pretty much every day for work. I use it primarily for Java development, and it fewer bugs than it used to. I haven't found a free IDE that works as well with Maven. For Python development I use PyCharm. It would be nice if it was able to pickup Python's dynamic nature, but it's great ...

Re: Anyone want to buy my Famicom collection?

I'm interested in how you modified your CRT to accept RGB. Did you tap directly into the driver transistors on the back of the neck of the tube? (and send the sync signal into the composite input). I've tried this once before, but I couldn't get the levels quite right. The contrast would always come...

This is pretty informative for me as I didn't know all the details behind the C64's VIC chip. He goes into depth on the 6502 as well.

Re: Price of used NES hardware

I've always noticed the Super Famicom stuff is always cheaper than the SNES stuff. For action games, I think it's great. I picked up Super Famicom Yoshi's Island loose cart for $8 (inc shipping). The SNES one goes for about $25. I doubt this will last, but I'm getting all my favorite action games fo...

Why you should not insert a cartridge when the C64 is on

Not NES related, but I had a C64 when I was a kid and was always told never to insert a cartridge when my C64 was on. My friend accidentally did this, and afterwords a bunch of strange things started happening such as keys not working or displaying the wrong character when pressed. Garbled character...

I wish I'd not been so scared of programming that I ended up doing SysAdmin for 10 years.

Re: My game is on greenlight

I would love to work on games for a living, but my last 2 attempts failed. It seems more like winning the lottery if your game is successful, regardless of how fun it is. I have since given up and moved back into back-end systems development and testing and am doing quite well for myself again. It j...

Re: Why so few surface mount ICs in NES/FC carts

I'm more surprised by the fact the the SNES were both through hole. Only a few SNES games were surface mount (mostly the ones with special chips).
I'm even more surprised that the N64 is almost entirely through hole. I guess DIP still wasn't that expensive in the mid to late 90s and early 2000s.

I have no idea why the PAL version of SSF2 has no sprite corruption, but the NTSC (NA/Jap) does not on a NTSC console.
