Re: Mario 7 IN 1 Multicartridge

Farids site still exists and has a treasure trove of information and files. Not exactly the easy to figure what to click to download due to old broken frame layout.... but still working! unfortunately i can't read that... it looks like you posted the thumbnail, not the actual schematic. but i will ...

Re: UMC UA6528 = Ricoh 2C02E, not G?

I kinda want to make an N64 adapter that can emit 480p/576p. (The N64's video interface supports reprogramming the video mode. But the software only exposed predefined video modes for SDTV). The problem is that the the pixel clock is slow enough (NTSC: ≈12.2MHz, PAL: ≈12.4MHz) that just eliding all...

I do at least have a NES-001 with a socketed PPU.
don't tell me you've had a burned-out PPU also... that would be spooky...

Re: UMC UA6528 = Ricoh 2C02E, not G?

Super Cars seems to be using it as a way to detect when rendering starts: there's a loop at $CB6B that waits for the contents to no longer be the first byte of OAM. Without it, the top 16 scanlines are a jittery mess and often with the wrong scroll value; with it, the top 16 scanlines are a nice cl...

Re: UMC UA6528 = Ricoh 2C02E, not G?

IIRC, Super Cars uses it to time that gray section at the top of the screen, supposedly masking off scrolling glitches. ah! well, i did see that. the overscan area at the top glitches like crazy while the game is in motion, but tbh i can't really call it a "glitch" since i am not supposed to be abl...

Re: Famicom : Wavy artefacts on top of screen?

i can tell you from firsthand experience that some CRT's, for whatever reason, turn their noses up at a composite-modded RF Fami. i still have no idea why. i've got one of the last "regular" Trinitrons (from 1999, before the flatscreen models) and after modding TWO Famicoms with composite and seeing...

Re: UMC UA6528 = Ricoh 2C02E, not G?

hmm... okay, i made myself a copy of Super Cars and just did a race. i don't see anything obviously glitchy like the menus in Micro Machines. in fact, all i can find on the wiki is that Super Cars uses an unofficial CPU opcode, but nothing PPU related.

Super Cars is another game that relies on being able to spy the sprite evaluation pattern in order to synchronize with the PPU.
i will check out that one, surprised it's a licensed title...

i was assuming that all licensed NES/Fami games were designed for the 2C02E.

I'll update my page on the wiki to incorporate your findings. Sorry it was misleading.
not at all! even if i knew beforehand it was a clone of rev. E, i would have still bought it. i don't have any spare 2C02G's and even a junk NES console to steal the chip out of would have been more expensive.

UMC UA6528 = Ricoh 2C02E, not G?

i made an interesting observation recently... i came into possession of a toploader with a bad PPU, it was toast. (white and gray blobs on the screen instead of sprites and backgrounds) i figured the cheapest and most convenient way to repair it was to order one of the old UMC clone chips, which you...

Re: NES Read Issues - Thoroughly cleaned and lockout disabled

it's possible your issue is bad SRAM inside the NES. a RAM issue can be indistinguishable from a CPU issue, and the 2A03 so far has proven to be more reliable overall than certain brands of SRAM chips. this is a problem that's beginning to pop up more and more as these consoles hit the ~35 year mark...

If you put a chip in the socket, it wont fit in shell anymore. i took the thing apart...again... to see if this is true. and yes. if i put something in the socket, it won't close anymore. and then i noticed this: IMG_3002.jpg i have NEVER seen this before! i completely missed it when i took the fir...

Re: Kaiser chips KS204/KS203/KS202 + kaiser boards

oh i forgot to mention my favorite part of that Devil Town II cartridge. the CHR-RAM socket. there's a 6264 already surface mounted there, which means the socket was installed afterwards . WHY?? so if the original SOIC fails, you can instantly piggyback a new working DIP part? how... thoughtful??? ...
