Re: Boxes for Famicom cartridges
If you're just looking to protect the cartridge, I find clear box/cart protectors to be a nice cost effecient solution, that's still able to fit custom printed covers/back labels if you really want: https://www.theboxprotectorshop.nl/c-4481753/famicom-cart-protectors/ Of course no matter your soluti...

Re: Famicom microphone question
This thread made me think... and it's probably a dumb question, but I don't know a lot about hardware and electronic. But if the Famicom Microphone can play its input over the TV audio, and the Famicom expansion audio works by simply wiring the cartridge pin to the console audio out, does that mean ...

Re: What are your favorite ways games have ended levels?
I love when there's a bit of "fanfare" to beating a level or at least a boss. When the game makes it feel like you've achieved something. The already mentioned Super Mario World sequence is really effective at this, and the overflow of suave design in the MegaDrive Sonic games is an absolu...

Re: Dragon Quest discussion continued
FF6 is the only game where game over doesn't reset the game, but makes you start at some save point again. I'm unsure wether it just auto-reload the last save, or if it keeps earned EXP/Gil/trasure. Also FF6 is the only game where one KO character can, in some circumstances, mean a direct game over...

Re: Dragon Quest discussion continued
I found escaping is a pretty central mechanic in at least the first three Dragon Quest games. There are situations in DQ2 especially where it's simply the only way you can realistically expect to survive. Of course, it's all a part of the series' famous gambling aspects, and your best bet is often a...

Re: Dragon Quest discussion continued
Personally I really like the idea of reaching a town as finding a safe heaven. The early Dragon Quest games more than anything really excel at making every venture out of a safety zone into an exciting journey of their own, and it's one of the really strong points of DQ2 especially. Backing this is ...

Re: Dragon Quest discussion continued
Lots of stuff to go through in this thread, so it'll probably take me a few days to catch up.... But personally I finally dived seriously into the DQ series a few years ago, around a year before DQ11 came out. And by "seriously" I mean playing every single game in the series that I hadn't ...

I loved playing through your Atari port the other day, and it's really really solid - especially for an Atari 2600 game!
You know I'm excited for this one, definitely getting a cartridge once you manage to put some together

Re: Sam's Journey · A new NES game in the making
How should someone doing a debut cartridge release cover the cost of importing the appropriate console and a compatible low-latency TV? I have contributed to several NES cartridge releases but never acted as producer. For anyone in Europe with any genuine interest in the NES, it's very common to ow...

Re: Having issues with my NESRGB console
Sorry for asking the obvious, but did you try connecting the video to a regular CRT TV just to make sure it's still sending a proper signal? And even if it's not "proper", it should probably be a lot more obvious what's wrong with it.

Re: Difference between RAM and cartridge SRAM?
$700-$7FF is just regular NES RAM same as the rest of it, using it for a stack in the compiled C code is a CC65 specific thing.

Re: Difference between RAM and cartridge SRAM?
but battery backed WRAM is also used, and besides it can still be used as normal work RAM no matter if it has a battery or not. Important difference is though, that most mappers with battery backed RAM also often include a way to protect writes to the RAM, since unintended writes while turning off ...

Re: Was SMB really supposed to be the last cart game for FC?
I think it's hard to find a source more reliable than Miyamoto himself. I also find the claim very easy to believe, even though it's the first time I've heard of it. While it might not be a definitive business decision, I think it's unlikely that the idea wasn't at least circling within the Nintendo...
