Re: Full Quiet - cryptic open-world mystery adventure platformer
i also just played this game for around an hour. i'd give it a 9/10 from what i've seen so far. pros - this might be one of the most fully featured NES game i've ever seen, with a character inventory, maps, mini-games, and deep mechanics. i'm seriously impressed! - the world itself is fairly fascina...

Re: Is the following ChatGPT-generated SNES code legit?
right, the RTS instructions are gibberish as well. when you consider that the entire macros is ~15 cycles to execute, and 2 of them are wasted, and 6 of them are not only wasted, but also used to create a bug.... that's not great. hopefully things improve on that front, as i'd much rather spend time...

Re: Is the following ChatGPT-generated SNES code legit?
i have asked chatGPT to code a few tasks in 6502 as a test. it gave mostly correct, but badly programmed (inefficient) answers. even when i specifically pointed to instructions that did nothing but waste CPU time it was unable to remove them in a way that makes sense. and that was for simple tasks, ...

i don't mean to be overly sarcastic here, but think about how embarrassing it would be if your NES game felt outdated!

Re: 8-Way Scrolling Screen Compression Method?
in many games you also need to change attributes when blocks are collected, destroyed or modified for any reason, so you need to keep the attributes of the entire screen, unless you want to waste CPU time checking the state of 3 other blocks every time 1 block needs to change. you can achieve all o...

Re: 8-Way Scrolling Screen Compression Method?
i wrote a simple 8-way scrolling engine recently. one thing that can make it easier is using a mapper with 4-way mirroring, such as GTROM. for compression i used an object based system, sort of based on metroid, but modified to fit my needs. each object is just a list of columns. each column is a li...

Re: Official NES Homebrew Seal of Quality
rather than longing for corporate control i think it's more about making a product that looks like it could have been contemporaneously released on the system.

Re: Permadeath in games
a game the scope of zelda with perma death would be immensely frustrating in my opinion. a better option might be a special ending for people who can win in one life, or something. even better might be having certain areas that need to be beaten entirely with one life before moving on to the next ar...

Re: What is too politically toxic?
LOL, omg... okay, i guess. you realize that when bregalad was using the word 'fascist' it was in direct response to something somebody else said right? he even quoted the person first and proclaimed it was EXACTLY what I find absolutely horrendeous and politically toxic. it is bregalad who accused p...

Re: What is too politically toxic?
One person described the idea of imposing ones ideas on others as a fascist approach, which is correct by some definitions of the word. i'm really sick of pointing this out, but NOBODY IN THIS THREAD ATTEMPTED TO IMPOSE IDEAS ON OTHERS. NOBODY. if you actually read the quote that got called fascist...

the only reason i commented at all was to make it clear to tepples that not everybody felt that way.
i regret it. should have just pm'ed him rather than constantly have to defend my utterly milquetoast critique.

Re: What is too politically toxic?
Perhaps the word "fascist" was a bit ill-judged, but it's fairly clear what point he was trying to emphasize. Taking offense instead of considering his point is not going to result in a productive discussion. Many of the responses to him have been snide, mocking and disingenuous; this is ...

Re: What is too politically toxic?
whatever one can say about the comments regarding bregalad, one thing you can't do is change the order of events. he called somebody a fascist, it was out of line. you may not think the responses were as measured as i do, but we can all agree that they were in response to him fulfilling godwin's law...

Re: What is too politically toxic?
I just wanted to point out that the attacks on him has no value in a healthy discussion and lol, nobody 'attacked' bregalad. there were two minor comments. mine basically was saying i don't think he's a good judge of what constitutes political toxicity. nothing more, nothing less. that's hardly an ...
