Re: Looks like NESCartDB is down (again)...

Xkeeper and I have been running TCRF for over 10 years now (Xkeeper does all the actual backend and site maintenance stuff) and we'd be more than happy to host this alongside our site.

Re: PPU wait for ready in Donkey Kong

First, big thanks for trying this out! Second, I'll assume that booting with RESET held down will always fail? I tried it a few times, and yeah, it failed each time. So, another update: I borrowed a roommate's top-loader, which has rev. H CPU/PPU. Magic John booted every time, though occasionally t...

Re: PPU wait for ready in Donkey Kong

So, at Fiskbit's request, I tested both my Magic John and Lord of King carts (same developers) on my modified front-loader. Both of them initially boot fine, BUT if you either press Reset or cycle the power too quickly, they freeze at a black screen. Holding Reset does not work; the console must be ...

Re: Rad Racer scrolling

A local arcade has a PlayChoice-10 cabinet with Rad Racer, and it exhibits a lot of scanline glitches on the right side of the screen (way more than Nestopia or an ordinary console show). It's not a problem with the hardware, because the owner has another PCB that does the same thing. Both boards al...

Nope. No official US SNES model had a compatible plug, and the NES adapter outputs AC, which is very very bad for a console that needs DC.

Re: Super Famicom Used In United States ?

You can safely use a Super Nintendo (SNES) AC adapter on a Super Famicom. Actually, you can't, because the US SNES uses a special snowflake plug on the deck end, instead of the standard connector used by the NES, Genesis, et al. (I think Nintendo only chose this plug to prevent people from using th...

Re: FMV on the NES ... kind of

What would be really cool is something like the MSU-1 for the PowerPak and/or Everdrive N8. Perhaps something with the same basic capabilities as an FME-7 or VRC6, but with the ability to stream a PCM sound file to the sound expansion pin, and a PRG/CHR data file to either a mapper register or direc...

Re: Is there an emulator that can do fullscreen without tear

- FCEUX: I've never gotten this thing to do windowed sync correctly. There is always some form of intermittent tearing no matter what combination of options I use (including "Wait for VBlank" instead of "lazy wait"). I mainly use FCEUX for debugging/RE'ing, but for me I use it like a combo of Nesto...

Re: Everdrive - garbled graphics in final fantasy - advice?

I don't even understand how a fragmented file could cause problems if it has to be loaded into RAM before it can be run, unless the file loading code/hardware is severely bugged and is corrupting the data (though I think that would manifest itself in much more serious ways than making some sprite bi...

Re: Famicom to NES converter + CIC

Oddly enough, my Honey Bee adapter actually had a spot on the board for a CIC , wired identically to a real NES cart. After pulling out the badly-soldered mishmash of a "stunner" circuit, I dropped in a CIC from an old Tag Team Pro Wrestling cart, and it worked just fine. I wonder if they had plans ...

Re: Random glitchy line in Super Mario Bros. on real hardwar

Bit of a bump, but I seem to have fixed this problem in my NES port of Vs. Super Mario Bros. All I had to do was modify the game so that it never disables NMI, but uses a flag in RAM instead (as most newer games seem to do): - When NMI hits, check this flag; if it is clear, proceed with the usual NM...

Re: ROM that shows the colors

Sadly, even with all-digital signals and cutting-edge LCD technology the norm, most TV manufacturers still insist on screwing with the colors by default: http://bmf.rustedlogic.net/misc/hdtv-before.jpg http://bmf.rustedlogic.net/misc/hdtv-after.jpg This is how my 2-year-old mid-range HDTV renders co...

Re: Versions of the NES

So no direct comparison has actually been done, then... :? I'm going to assume Sega-16 was playing the game in ZSNES or something, which did introduce extra lag in my old SMW hack that's not present (or greatly reduced) on a real console. I'm quite certain it takes more than three enemies and a Yosh...

Re: Versions of the NES

Where are you getting this "3 fishes and a Yoshi" slowdown figure from? When was the last time you compared the SMAS+W cart to an original SMW cart? I'm not aware of any major code changes that were made to the game, other than the addition of alternate Luigi sprites (which aren't even stored in the...

Re: Versions of the NES

I have a very old toaster NES (smooth plastic on the bottom, very low serial number) which has noticeably darker video output than all of my later models, close to that of my AV Famicom. I used to prefer using it over my other toasters because the picture looked so much cleaner (sharper edges and le...
