Re: Anyone Interested in a Combined NES + Gameboy Cart?

Wow lots of interest in how to get it to play other systems on the NES. haha. I really do like that rgb121 thing, it is the damnest thing, curious about how that'd look on a bigger screen. I might give it a try on the systems I have to see what it'd look like. I did try benham colour once and it was...

Re: Horizontal stripes in "Super Mario Bros."

Rygar also has this problem. I discovered it on the HDMI adapter work. If you go up the first rope you come to, go across 1 screen then down the 2nd rope and just hang on the rope, one of the scanlines of the tree trunk will wiggle occasionally. After seeing it there, I saw it easily on SMB and seve...

Re: Anyone Interested in a Combined NES + Gameboy Cart?

some clarifications: Mappers would not be user-updateable; I'd have to compile them into the main FPGA code. Be that as it may, I have support for pretty much every mapper under the sun, so I don't see this as a major problem. The other method I was thinking of to handle mappers was a very fast (200...

Re: Anyone Interested in a Combined NES + Gameboy Cart?

Sounds cool! The Game Boy part is really interesting, and together with support for mappers that have been overlooked will surely guarantee a decent number of sales. I know I'm interested, and I already own the 2 existing flash carts. It's a shame the NES can't do Game Boy Color graphics, because I...

Anyone Interested in a Combined NES + Gameboy Cart?

Now that the HDMI project is in the bag and mostly thru production, I was wondering about a next project and had the idea for a really nifty flash cartridge. Yes, there's two on the market right now (Power Pak and the Everdrive) but I was thinking of making my own to address the shortcomings of both...

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES

Another note: The Everdrive is having a lot of problems with the HidefNES due to the clocking required to make it work. The early versions of the mapper (version 3) seem to mostly work, but anything later DOES NOT WORK. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do to fix this, and on examination of the ...

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES

That's good to hear, but I'm hoping you or someone else can get us a concrete answer about how using the RGB and HDMI in the same system would work. Here's how it works: Plugging in the HDMI cable sets the system to emit HDMI video. it changes the CPU/PPU over to use the FPGA-generated special cloc...

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES

Woot, I finally sent the stuff off so the HiDefNES boards are in production! I have also posted the final "pre production" update. I don't know how long it will be until I get boards in hand but I will probably post another update video when that happens.

Re: Building a Timeline of NES CPU Production

those surface mount RAM chips sure are cute. I like the metal heat spreader that's double stuck to the PPU. I have seen that before, and my E rev PPU had one of them as well. Underneath the heat spreader the chip has the usual E rev markings and is otherwise normal looking. The B and A rev PPUs had ...

Re: Building a Timeline of NES CPU Production

Kind of tangentially related, but I was trying to come up with a complete set of NES CPUs and PPUs. I am fairly sure I have a complete set now, or mostly so. I have the following revisions: CPU's: blank, E, G, H PPU's: A, B, D, E, G, H I suspect that the first "buggy" systems had a blank rev PPU in ...

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES

Is there a reason why values of settings are in hex? Is space in the menu program really too tight for a hex-to-decimal converter? Yup. It was thrown in at the end. I have around 20-30 bytes free in the ROM now, and I have "repacked the suitcase" (optimized for space) the code several times already...

Re: Mode 7 rotation and masking sprites for landmarks

equinox abuses mode 7 on the intro (most emulators seem to put a black circle around it) when it shows the world map

and the world map itself is mode 7 with sprites sitting on it. you can rotate the world map as you walk around on it, and sometimes you need to.

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES

it could independently re-generate composite video over the video jack, but to what end? To facilitate recording. Some capture devices have composite and S-Video inputs but not HDMI inputs, possibly because their manufacturers assume that "most" HDMI signals will have HDCP (even though this product...

I am not sure what the cost will be exactly, but I hope to sell the board for 100 bucks or less.

Re: Hi-Def NES HDMI Adapter for the NES

Update #8 is now posted. This time I show how I place the parts and reflow solder it in a modified toaster oven.

After a few more minor additions, I think it will be ready for the world.
