Re: Start developing a game and don't sink into engine desig

The Lua scripting feature of FCEUX provides access to NES cpu memory so it's definitely possible to prototype the gameplay on the Lua side. Though as Tokumaru hinted, the rom should still have a typical NMI update routine. A minimal loop looks like this: while(true) do emu.frameadvance() --game loop...

Re: [RANT] Consumerism in games

"Both midair aiming and shield surfing have in-game tutorials." There's a no-climb run on YT where someone found it possible to defeat Vah Medoh without mid-air aiming. Here's a few minor annoyances about BOTW: -All shop keepers and even traveling merchants can pay unlimited rupees for your stuff. M...

Re: Can you write windows app in regular C++?

QT is another platform for making Windows apps in C++. Although there are QT hooks for other languages including Python.

Re: Why is there no set standard for what Zelda looks like?

I'm starting to think the greatest philosophical question of our time is what to make of LBW. The reuse of the setting of LTTP creates an irritating dichotomy - is LBW a brilliant redesign of LTTP or a goofy imitation? The dungeons are more sophisticated but the core design is still ripped straight ...

And although all the Zeldas are of the same royal blood line, Link is usually unrelated to other Links. One exception may be the ALttP Link who is, together with his uncle, the last descendants of the knights of Hyrule who fought Ganon. Since Skyward Sword we know... I edited that post to remove th...

Don't look at videos of the cancelled Sonic X-Treme, whatever you do.

Re: What was the first NES homebrew game?

This doesn't answer the question, but Sack of Flour by Bob Rost (and co) was the first NES homebrew I played, though the one that convinced me really good stuff could be made was Dikki Painguin in TKO for the Third Reich (also by someone in Bob Rost's class). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjJ4UBPT...

Re: Please pick apart my character art (Part 2)

Famous (that is, re-used) cartoon characters tend to be watered-down over the years. Check out the original model sheet for Bugs Bunny (by Bob Givens) http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6884/1394/1600/Wild%20Hare%20copy.jpg as opposed to how he appeared in "Space Jam" https://vignette1.wikia.nocooki...

Re: Plextona SNES

believe it or not this is actually a Super Mario World rom hack
I've seen several SMW hacks and this has me scratching my head. Even hacks with new mechanics like Brutal Mario still keep the basic gameplay intact.

Yeah, I've rarely met anyone who says they played "Atari VCS," it's always just "Atari".

Re: Self-made misconceptions that you believed about games

Not exactly misconceptions so much as stuff I didn't know: -That the Atari 2600 was really called "VCS". -How Nintendo games could be on Atari systems (of course that pre-dates Nintendo being a system maker, but even then the Atari 7800 versions of DK and DKjr were released post-NES). -That the Atar...

Re: Mega Man fan game seeks level designer and pixel artist

Megaman as a rule doesn't lend itself to co-op play, because while it appears to be a run-and-gun, the player is encouraged to stop moving and assess the current situation. You'd have two players arguing to set the pace of the action, while Double Dragon and Contra give you little choice when to mov...
