Make sure your background .chr file is 4kb. If it is smaller, then sprites .chr file might be simply included right after background. See PPU viewer if you can find your sprite tiles on the background "side" of the viewer. To avoid this you can either(in your case, since you are using NROM+CHR ROM):...

I'm using a NESASM all the time and I can say with all confidence it does work. Even more-I'm making a MMC3 project right now. The "bank crossing" applies only to code, not data. From what I can remember including it all at once won't work. NESASM is also really shitty with error messages in situations like this. Great, I (probably) can finish a game within a month for category 3 (UNROM).

Don't want to be rude, but for clarity sake, MilioNESy is listed as fifth game in the compo list while having more points than Sliding Blaster, did someone make a mistake while writing points for Sliding Blaster?
