To me it looks really good. I like it when grass doesn't look real on the ol' NES. The only thing that stands out to me is there are no tiles for the vertical edges.

The fact that your game is long doesn't necessarily mean that you need a lot of space to represent states. For platformers, passwords are usually enough. True, there will be quite a few items and power-ups, and the hero's current position in the world... But each item could be represented by 1 bit ...

Most of the time, 8KB is too much for save data, but since Nintendo already used 8KB RAM chips for CHR-RAM it was probably easier/cheaper for them to use the same chip than to go with something smaller. Should I try again on 10.10 or wait for 11.04? Mine is working well on 10.04 64bit. I'm actually a tad scared to try 11.04. I'd just use Wine. Emulators just work. This might be the way to go. I've actually never tried this (for NES emulators). The problem in and linux distro for games is always so...
