Re: Fastest Scroll Speed

It seemed to be a common trend for fast scrolling games to make use of the infamous Flintstones technique, where the background is obviously repeated in a short period of time. Bio Force Ape is especially guilty of this. Was that purely a design choice, or a limitation of the console? And speaking o...

Re: Best practise to avoid scanline limitations

Realistically, what any developer would have done is make the snake into a background object and draw new tiles for its body as it grows. If you wish to make the snake appear as if it is moving, you can add sprites at the beginning and end of the snake to hide the blocks from randomly disappearing. ...

Re: Some art from my old Sonic project

Such a weird choice Nintendo made... Cutting/breaking plastic is not something ordinary consumers do. A good guess would be that Nintendo was planning on putting the FDS out for the United States, but saw literally no reason for it since cartridges superseded the only advantage the diskettes had. S...

Re: Some art from my old Sonic project

I guess the motto should now be 'Genesis does what Ninten-also-does'. While I'm not a fan of expanded audio, maybe this could use the VRC7 audio as well for that Genesis-y sound, but that's for another time.

Still very impressed what a bit of arranging could do with the NES' limited graphics.

Re: MyaxGrafx: Beyond 8x8: 8x1 pixel attributes...and more?

I'm not sure if Nintendo was ever proposed a console by Hudson, but if that's the case, then the Playstation would make a whole lot more sense now. The TG16 failed without Nintendo's involvement, why shouldn't the Playstation? And just like the PCE, it was backed by an electronics company larger tha...

Re: NES Coder Needed For Party Game (PAID)

It looks like 2015 will be the renaissance of NES releases, as not only where two successful Kickstarter NES projects are slated for release in 2015, but there's another game that appears to be currently under development as well. The NES will be turning 30 this year, which is amazing. That said, go...

Re: More NSF Requests

Regarding the Capcom 30 in 1, most, if not all, of the sounds/sounds are from Legendary Wings. Not surprising since Legendary Wings was a US exclusive title, and I don't think it was released elsewhere.

And shit, I remember LXXX XXXXT NSF. Good to know where it came from.

Re: Morphcat's live streaming making an NES game for Ludum D

That looks pretty damn good, if I knew any better I'd say you were an actual NES-era developer, except for the fact that there didn't be any German NES software houses.

Also, the black bars, aren't they used to reduce Vblank time or something, so that the NES has less to render?

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms

I theorized that that was the reason why so many NES games have dual harmonies; it was just a coincidence it also happened to sound good. If both squares were playing the same tune, if one of them were to be cut out for any reason, there would be a negligible loss in musical quality, as the song is ...

Re: Mockups of games from other platforms

Since people brought it up, I feel like the default 2A03 is grossly underrated, instead opting for bells and whistles like VRC6 or N163. Primarily it's because the NES' ancient graphical capabilities will often clash horribly with the futuristic sound coming from the same machine. In a way it's unde...

As a whole, Predator is a weirdly designed game. It seems like it was developed by people who knew what they were doing tech-wise, but had no idea regarding gameplay.

Re: Quite Possibly the Most Ambitious NES Port Ever (Concept

Predator does something similar for the big-mode stages. http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/images/f/f8/Predator_-_NES_-_Gameplay_2.png Arnold has been rendered as a background image, while everything else, including the mid-air platforms, are sprites that scroll. So what you could do is have the floor and t...

Re: Quite Possibly the Most Ambitious NES Port Ever (Concept

Do a Kid Niki and make that take a sprite while the ship is a BG object that moves around. Of course, the Tank is too big to be used as a sprite, so only use around 16 pixels or so. http://www.flyingomelette.com/reviews/nes/screens/kidnikiboss.gif Alternatively, just remove the tank entirely and jus...

Re: Looking for NES Coder ( Paid )

Well this is an interesting subject, I hope the project goes well for everyone involved! @Mike: I think it'd be better for you to say "a good chunk" as opposed to "most" or "nearly all", regarding stylized graphics being used to compensate for the NES' limitations. For example, Konami's NES characte...

Re: Quite Possibly the Most Ambitious NES Port Ever (Concept

Never mind the sprite flicker, what about the slowdown?

While the picture does look very nice, I can't help but feel that the detailing is a bit TOO busy for the NES' capabilities. It's kind of hard to look at at times, basically.
