Re: Using an old (copyrighted) score as soundtrack to a game

I always did wonder if there would be any legal repercussions to, say, using "Unchained Melody" as the ending/credits theme of an NES game. As an homage to a certain breed of multicarts which used an arrangement of said song as their menu music, which plenty of people (myself included) have been exp...

Re: Designing the most boring, most generic NES game imagina

Basically what Asaki said, the idea is that some games were very obviously made due to a CEO who likes to bark orders at a group of overworked, underpaid programmers. The CEO will see that there's dozens of Baseball, Mahjong, and Pachinko games for the Famicom, so he believes this Frankenstein's cre...

Re: Some people in the between 1980s and 1990s

Since you mentioned IREM, I think it's worth noting that they're the Japanese equivalent to Rare, at least after the buyouts. IREM rarely does their own games anymore, and now work under Sony developing stuff for the PlayStation Home thing.

Man, this got out of hand quickly.

Re: Some people in the between 1980s and 1990s

You know, it's amazing what Activision has been reduced to... Say what you want about Activision's current output, at least the games they put out now resemble actual games as opposed to the tripe they used to put out, like Predator, Ghostbusters, or Super Pitfall. And how ironic that Nintendo's dr...

Re: Designing the most boring, most generic NES game imagina

Except the Gatsby game was more of a "good" depiction of NES games, and not much else besides a sidescroller. It's still an average at best game, and would be an average game by NES standards, probably comparable to Karate Kid due to the fact it only has 4 levels.

Re: Some people in the between 1980s and 1990s

Yes, Puresound is what I was looking for! And IIRC, he was the founder and CEO. And since you mentioned there's companies in Japan that specialize in tracking down people, I am honestly curious about one Yukio Kaneda (his alias being KNT in-game), programmer of two SNK NES games. What makes this guy...

Re: Some people in the between 1980s and 1990s

Not sure where you can contact them, but a site called VGMPF wherein they list various composers and their related projects. They've even had luck tracking down people who did music in games that otherwise had no credits. http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/ I'm certain most of them have a facebook or even th...

Re: Designing the most boring, most generic NES game imagina

I honestly wonder if "Ninja Baseball Batman" was born out of the relatively common game tropes of the time, those being ninjas, baseball, and licensed properties.

Re: Designing the most boring, most generic NES game imagina

So I woke up and I still think this idea of a game would be horrible, horrible enough to warrant an awesome box cover that would give the impression the game would be good. Essentially, perfect enough to have been an actual Famicom game, though I don't see how mahjong or pachinko could appeal to Ame...

Designing the most boring, most generic NES game imaginable

I only put this here because, admittedly, there's nowhere else for it. If this isn't the proper place for it, then feel free to remove it. So I went out to celebrate my birthday with friends and family, and my brother got me some relatively sweet booze. Allegedly, Takeshi Kitano came up with the ide...

Re: Opinions on my NES style game

@Sik: I was referring to how the lift appears to be a "solid brick" when it's graphic doesn't look like it. Perhaps he was trying to emulate the limitations of moving BG tiles, but since it's moving, it should be classified as a sprite. It's hard to see the "solid brick", but believe me when I say i...

Re: Opinions on my NES style game

That is pretty good, however I wonder why the elevator has a black outline, when it's a "sprite"? And little demos like these are often disheartening because no NES game could ever look that slick, not then due to technological constraints (cartridge memory, infantile memory switching hardware), and...

This is a site dedicated to development of ancient Nintendo consoles, not a dating site for people dedicated to the development of ancient Nintendo consoles.

Re: NES Pirate

I see the pirate has been made a little smaller. I was also going to mention that I -just- noticed that the Pirate used to have a pink nose. I'm not sure how well the pink would stand out from his skin if this were an NES game, so seeing how it blended it well, I figured it would be rather wasteful ...

Re: NES Pirate

Looks pretty good, actually. However, I'm going to guess that the random skulls on the floor would be rendered as 'sprites' since there doesn't appear to be a background palette for those. Of course since this isn't designed to be made for the NES in the first place, it's not an issue, but a key rea...
