Re: 2014 NESDev Compo - Guidelines/Rules

What about open source, openly shared code? So long as licensing requirements are upheld, would it not be okay to use especially things like generic libraries and such? Or if someone took a hello world example, or nerdy nights tutorial do we want to discourage things like that? I would hope not, bu...

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

Thanks! There is still a long way to go, but I already have it up and running with a little spotlight (4x4 tiles). I'll play around with it for a while and see what I can figure out on my own, but thanks again. I would guess that next up is adjusting it to player movement, buffering, loading real da...

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

I have done a few things beyond the tutorials (no scrolling projects, though my current one is up and, uh, running), and am learning as I go. This task may be a bit beyond me, however, we will see. Someone was nice enough to share his collision code with me a while back, and from this I have the X a...

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

I spent a lot of time messing around with this over the last few days, and am plain stuck. I managed to figure out how to do a spotlight with sprites, but what I would like to do is to accomplish a similar feature with the nametable or attribute method. To give some concreteness to the problem, I wo...

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

All right. I have had a chance to look into some of these examples a bit more thoroughly and figure out what they are doing, but I am still a bit fuzzy on how they are doing it. How does one change a great quantity of tiles like that on the fly, either using the nametable method or the attribute tab...

Re: Random Horizontally Scrolling Background Columns?

Ha! I see the error in my thinking now. Since the code that had been shared with me was divided up into sections, I came to think of them as actual sections, when in fact the divisions are arbitrary. False problem resolved :) Thanks for the hint, too! I'll sleep on it, but at the moment I am not rea...

Re: Random Horizontally Scrolling Background Columns?

Hacking a binary is a bit beyond my skills (and interests) as well! Looking over it again, the only change that I have made to the NN code is replacing "columndata," which pointed to a BIN file that I could not figure out how to peek at, with my overly gigantic array. SourceLow would appear to be th...

Re: Random Horizontally Scrolling Background Columns?

Well, my ignorance is about to show through :) Yes, it is a huge array. In my defense it was up to 32x256, but I began to suspect that there might be a better way. With some help I managed to alter the NN code to be dependent on player movement, and it only scrolls in one direction and loops back to...

Re: Random Horizontally Scrolling Background Columns?

So far I simply have them run one after the other, through four nametables worth of data (16 sets). It looks a bit like this: Level1Nametable: .db $80,$80,$80,$80, $80, $80,$80,$80,$80,$80,$80,$80, $80, $80,$80,$80 ;1-1 (Column set 1) .db $80,$80,$80,$80, $80, $80,$80,$80,$80,$80,$80,$80, $80, $80,$...

Random Horizontally Scrolling Background Columns?

After playing around with lesson #3 of the Advanced Nerdy Nights ( http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=36958 ), I was wondering how one might go about loading endless, random nametable data into the program? Not entirely random data, of course, but random sets of pre-d...

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

Thanks! Those examples really help to get an idea of what can be done. I had forgotten about many of them, since they seem to be those difficult parts of games that I have tried to block from my mind :D . I will post further questions as I try to get something similar to the nametable/rounded-sprite...

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

Oh yeah, if anybody knows of any other examples to study I would be more than appreciative. A nice technical explanation is simply an added bonus (thanks Dwedit!).

Re: Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

Thanks for the help! I did not know if there might be some trick to doing this effect. I had not thought of using rounded sprites to smooth things out, thanks for the tip.

Torches, Darkness, and Backgrounds?

Hello, I have looked around NESDEV and elsewhere, but I have been unable to find any information on this topic so I thought that I would see if anyone here might be able to help. I apologize if this has been brought up before; perhaps I am searching using the wrong terms. Regardless, how would one g...
