Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

And the tiny number of ROMs that adjust themselves to all three systems (apparently your demo and a few games from Ei-How Yang) A lot of homebrews do similar adjustments. I took the idea of the adjustment of speed from Shiru, who made a lot of NES games, and his neslib (which makes this adjustment ...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

"Additional field" refers to the added bits to byte 12, not the entire byte or NES 2.0 in general. BTW, "preferred" system is not a new thing in my proposition. Current specification (without your changes) specifies meaning of two bits, and it has information about preferred system: 00 - NTSC is su...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

Also, the Dendy bit as I proposed has already been implemented by Mesen and NintendulatorNRS The issue that your proposition is poorly compatible with old code. For example, if I use an old version of Mesen with a ROM which uses 00000011 in this byte, it would always fallback to PAL, and it is wron...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

The scenario is still highly contrived because it requires adding support for the proposed field without also adding support for Dendy timing. Wrong. This field is already supported by the emulators which know about NES 2.0. For example, look at this code from the Mesen (before it adopted your sugg...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

Both being highly contrived scenarios. Sometimes it is not easy to add Dendy support to an emulator. For example, it took a lot of time to add it to the FCEUX, because FCEUX had a lot of hardcoded things throughout the whole codebase. In this case, an emulator could use information provided. I am s...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

To put it bluntly: if it is supposed to be run on Dendy, who gives a shit if it also can be run on NTSC and PAL? If an emulator don't support Dendy, it should know which system it should use. If a user prefers some specific system for some reason, but don't want to force it when it is not supported...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

Then just denote it as "Dendy". I do not see the value of also denoting that it sort-of works on NTSC and PAL. rainwarrior already has provided an example how to use this information: I think a useful set of user options to provide are: Auto (emulator chooses based on preference if supplied, otherw...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

I have not much to say about it as an iNES revision. I'll respond to the request to alter the 'regn' field though According to NSFe, I propose to extend the meaning of the byte $0006 in the INFO section. regn section would not be required at all if the byte $0006 is extended in a backward compatibl...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

Denoting what is preferred on the other hand is inherently subjective and therefore ambiguous. It's not subjective. The preferred system is the system which works perfectly with the ROM. The other ones are supported, but not perfect. For example, in case of Unchained Nostalgia, in case of PAL you w...

Re: NES 2.0 Additions Proposal

I propose to merge this topic into the older one: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2090 I had that one in the bookmarks, and I didn't know that there is an important discussion about the matter in another topic. Anyway, I propose to extend byte 12 this way: Byte 12: 7 0 --------- xdpn xx...

Re: NES 2.0 "Official" Specification

NSFe has an additional regn section for Dendy support now: https://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/NSFe#regn But I believe that we could extend the byte which describes which systems are supported and preferred in the NES, NSF and NSFe. Everywhere in the same way. My old proposition (with the Dendy flag...

Re: Schematic for UM6561?

I just got one famiclone with glob-top UM6561 (soldered on add-on board), but there is also place for regular 80 pin SMD UM6561. What is weird, its pinout it shifted from original UM6561 (this pin1 = UM6561 pin2, this pin 2 = UM6561 pin3). https://obrazki.elektroda.pl/3547142900_1509674797_thumb.jp...

Re: Famicom AV, PAL NES & Dendy chips decapsulation (progres

It would be nice to look at UM6561 also. I know that some people don't like these NES-on-a-chip, but actually it is just further development of UA6527 and UA6538. For example, it is interesting how switching between PAL and NTSC is done in these chips.

Re: Action 53 volume 3

Unchained Nostalgia is essentially a music video for a musical composition by Alex North. We'd need to seek his permission.
It is not possible just because he died more than 25 years ago.
