Re: Opinions on my NES style game

To be fair, many NES games avoided slopes altogether Err, SMB3 was choc-full of slopes, Kirby too. Giving a couple of examples doesn't really disprove the original statement. :) Sure, some platforming games on NES had slopes, but majority of them didn't. To be fair those were two of the best sellin...

Re: Opinions on my NES style game

This is looking very nice glad you ditched the black outlines. To be fair, many NES games avoided slopes altogether (because of the physics in general), but even then you can probably cheat by ensuring slopes are always in front of some foreground (effectively making them opaque like non-slope tiles...

Re: NES Pirate

This is absolutely fantastic. You've eschewed some of the NES restrictions like in Shovel Knight, but taken the aesthetics of the system to a whole new level. These bigger sprites give so much more room for personality, and the higher framerate has allowed for some fantastic subpixel animation. Wit...

Re: NES Pirate

In all seriousness though, I really think you should stick with the NES's color palette, You're right, on both counts. I've converted what I was doing back to NES palettes. Trying out a few colourways. Grey seems to be a favourite, thoughts welcome. colourways walk cycle https://dl.dropboxuserconte...

Re: NES Pirate

You know, I ran into the same situation as you while I was making an NES styled pirate game. I didn't like the NES's color palette so I decided to give it a 9 bit color palette. I then made the graphics 4bpp, but I was still frustrated with the 8 sprites per scan line limit, so I increased the over...

Re: NES Pirate

Finalised on a 6 colour palette, he is probably all good for animation now. Lot's of layers al-la Arthur style health.

Sprite has changed a lot (new concept art on devlog) and not using NES palette anymore... not strictly anyway.

Heres my idea for the Famicom DX, based on old SNES prototypes:

Re: CNES-88 / Famido / Famicube

how about the Neo Geo pocket color? The 2bpp tiles make it look too similar to the NES in my opinion. I remember games not scrolling the background planes individually either, which would make the difference between the systems more obvious. Ah they do it in metal slug, theres 2 planes for bg. Para...

Re: CNES-88 / Famido / Famicube

how about the Neo Geo pocket color? That kinda fits in the middle there, with it's 4 colour tiles and limited palettes. Neo Geo Pocket Color: Colors: 16 palettes per plane, 48 palettes. 146 colors on screen out of 4096 (or 20 colors out of 4096 in monochrome mode). Sprites: 64 sprites per frame (8x8...

Re: CNES-88 / Famido / Famicube

One problem with Arne's work is that he likes working with fixed palettes that have no basis in physical or monetary costs. The reason that the NES and Atari 2600/5200/7800 have the palette that they do is because these consoles natively generate video in HSV. Most other consoles natively generate ...

CNES-88 / Famido / Famicube

A while back an artist on pixelation / pixel joint known as Arne (not sure if he frequents here) wrote up a fairly detailed and interesting proposal for a console that would sit somewhere in-between the NES and SNES in terms of technology. The reasons why might not be apparent from a programming sid...

Re: NES Pirate

Well, it's my opinion anyway. Look at the skeleton on the staircase. Oh wait, I just noticed something. How do you have two different dark grays? Aren't they exactly the same? Oh, and the second to darkest brown doesn't look right. Are you trying to use the NES palette? Sprites in here are just pla...

Re: NES Pirate

Well it turned out Oblique looked like too much work in the long run. So I'm going with "top down" (Oblique90)

Here's a little mockup of the ground floor of Alias Arms.

Re: NES Pirate

So I'm thinking to have the interiors a little different to the exteriors, 4 options as follows: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1336763/interior.jpg [li]Side view (metroidvania)[/li] [li]Oblique 45 (rivercity rampage)[/li] [li]Oblique 90 (final fantasy)[/li] [li]Isometric (solstice)[/li] Any op...
