Re: posting code in hopes of peer reviews.

A more hardware related question - would it be reasonable to ask the NES +5v to supply 4 shift registers and 8 bcd decoders? I'm using a separate supply but feel a bit like i'm wearing both belt and braces. If i read the spec correctly, the bcd decoders are using 1mA each for supply and a neglible a...

Re: posting code in hopes of peer reviews.

nice! it gets overwritten in a few lines, but it seems a better practice in general. thanks! New version: ;assumptions: ;-it seems okay in theory to call this routine at will. If an NMI interrupts, ;there doesn't seem to be a way joypad reading and nixie output could interfere. ;-all this is assumin...

Re: posting code in hopes of peer reviews.

Thanks, everybody. The NES only has three general purpose outputs, and only one is available on the controller port. If you make an expansion port peripheral, however, this is fine. At some point i thought i'd use the expansion port, but then didn't feel like modifying the unit, so that approach mig...

posting code in hopes of peer reviews.

I plan to post code occasionally to see if i can get feedback on what to do better, what won't work, if you can spot any bug, or remarks about better practices. They might as well be collected into one thread. So here it goes, first function: A function to interface with a custom peripheral. It uses...

Re: Plutiedev's compatibility guidelines

A bit like with the patreon thread, i'm wondering if the question is based on problems that someone has had (ie. "the game i ordered won't play on my system and noone made it clear this would be the case", or "the forums are being flooded with irrelevant self-advertisement"), or if it is hypothetica...

Re: Plutiedev's compatibility guidelines

I wouldn't want to limit my designs to comply with the famicom titler. If it happens to do so; that's great, but i won't actively see to it. it's an obscure collectors' item. Iif you have it, you likely have another famicom/NES system too. And you probably have it because you're well aware of the PP...

Re: Patreon creator pages: yea or nay?

Yeah, that's about it. Patreon page holders are usually very polite and use phrases like "thanks for your support" and "thanks for helping me realizing this project" - it is good to highlight that the backers actually help sustain the viability of the project, be transparent what that money goes to,...

Re: Patreon creator pages: yea or nay?

Having a patreon is not asking for help, or begging. It is having (part of) a business model. You create content for your patrons and communicate with them in ways you wouldn't otherwise have done or had time for. It takes time and effort, and in other words, it is work. Whether that business model ...

Re: Patreon creator pages: yea or nay?

If someone wants to help you out financially, they will go looking for you to find out how they can do so I don't think that's how these things work. People will consider becoming a patron, or donate money to a paypal button (which would happen rarely in the first place; patreon has superceded payp...

Re: Patreon creator pages: yea or nay?

I don't have one. Just backing a few people i dig. But will say this: -programmers generally have good pay. -artists generally don't. if you want to commit to working with art you're willing to risk living below the poverty line. Much of the labor force that could do the stuff of dreams are busy bei...

Re: Best soundtrack?

Comparing aporia now... yeah, it's evident. in the call and response section, they do use both channels for a thicker sound in the "responses", but it seems they didn't think to merge the expansion sound into the vacant "calls" despite it not being occupied by anything else. It does kind of work for...

I think just PENTLY_ would work nicely for anyone, especially if using koitsus' line breaks and groupings.

Very nice! Getting things to align nicely in yy-chr is sometimes up to luck. This will be helpful. :)

Re: Namespacing symbols used by an ASM6 library

I definitely get that in a general situation. I think my slight* discomfort here is that the namespacing doesn't add any information a human would want to read. We already know it's pently because we just opened the pently source files, or baked the song data file. It's just a seatbelt meant for asm...

Re: Increasing x_pos by 4, but sprite can move outside of gr

Maybe you can trap it in a breakpoint that checks for a write to $203 that leaves a modulo of 4 to determine where it happens - Like so?

$203 % 4 != 0

I'm completely new to using C-style breakpoint conditions in the debugger, so someone more used to it may want to confirm or correct.
