Re: Best soundtrack?

It might just be me being skewed by what i heard first, but often feel some soundtracks that were originally composed for expansion chips were made better using just the mainboard channels for nes ports. This goes for most of the castlevania 3 soundtrack, and about 50/50 of the mr. gimmick soundtrac...

Re: How many times can the NES change scrolling in a frame?

Not just comics; newspapers still use a raster technique to convey photographic colour depth with with just the 4 CMYK base colours (and spaces of not-colour). Also known as half-tone. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lNzlqVMcIj8/ShsWiqAQO4I/AAAAAAAAAoo/rmszEw4ax68/s400/Using+FM.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.co...

Re: How many times can the NES change scrolling in a frame?

You're right. In a technical sense, this is where it comes from. But the use of "raster" as a distinction from vector graphics in graphics editors like illustrator, indesign and photoshop would far more common than the use within small retro computing scenes. It's not an argument why one should be p...

Re: How many times can the NES change scrolling in a frame?

I don't think it is quite that simple. The word has undergone several semantic shifts. If we skip the latin roots, and focus on its modern use, it is simply from the german word raster (which means screen). It has then been associated with scanlines. But in recent modern usage, "raster" is mostly us...

Re: Inferiority complex?

Yeah, i think it's more material conditions of the times, (the lack of) technical acceleration, and inherited privilege... i wouldn't attribute illiteracy to evil intent. Although there have been displays of political will in the 19th & 20th century especially to make leaps forward in widespread lit...

Re: Inferiority complex?

I'm like you.. if you don't count adventures and program drawn pictures written in qBasic from school days or a bit of scripted animation descriptions in afterEffects, romhacking and then 6502 assembly was my way into programming. You have genuine interest. IMO, that is all it takes. People are goin...

Re: NES Axelay Tech Demo

I've been thinking about using banked chr-ram to simplify the parallax effects that rely on pixel shifted copies, which also means they take up less of the 256 tiles of space you can display at the same time. As a bonus you'd also be able to be able to use it for other effects such as timed GIF-styl...

Re: Batch files as a build system for ASM6 projects

Yet another reason why it makes little sense for NESmaker to import .chr files to convert them to BMP:s only to re-convert them back to chr each build. It had been more time efficient to simply use chr:s directly and build bmp:s only if you wish to export and chr:s only if you wish to import. On the...

Re: NES Axelay Tech Demo

my initial thought when seeing it on twitter is you can use the same effect in a more limited field (less cpu consuming) to have rolling storm clouds or flowing water/lava/slime in single screen boss rooms. Or a waterfall in a fisheye perspectived topdowner. Will keep fantasizing about it for the go...

Re: Batch files as a build system for ASM6 projects

FWIW NESmaker is already bogging down buildtime by about 10 seconds compared to a free standing asm6 project. Much of it spent before calling asm6. My laptop isn’t the best workhorse though.

Re: Pently: a flexible, space-efficient NES music player

You can trust most asm6 users to be more at home in windows (and only have win installed for that matter); especally since NESmaker. So batch files would be the better option.

Re: AY-3-8910 / YM2149 emulation

Yeah the AY3 is coming in hot at 1vpp per channel, each about double the voltage of consumer audio levels for a mix. For experimenting I'd sum them at the virtual ground of an inverting op amp pair and use that to tone the volume down while at it. you may also want a potentiometer in there, but fixe...

Re: AY-3-8910 / YM2149 emulation

I didn't know these were in production anymore? They may be from time to time. the ay-3 machine was popular in various applications, including casino slot machines. You may use it in anything that beeps. While the envelopes aren't too musical seen as volume envelopes, they come in handy when you wa...

Re: AY-3-8910 / YM2149 emulation

I was maybe thinking more an UxROM-style mapper (ie lower in price to begin with). The chip/no chip margin seems to be closer together, too, from my comparison at chips available from utsource. Purpose being putting out a music cartridge to begin with, sort of to demo it. But i'm completely new to d...

Re: AY-3-8910 / YM2149 emulation

Hmm. An AY can be bought for much cheaper ($1.45 @ ≥100pcs) than an YM249F ($2.49 @ ≥100pcs). A d-flip flop to halve the clock could be had for a 0.1-0.3 cents*. 32 envelope steps notwithstanding, that might be a good approach to make sunsoft 5b-like boards available for homebrew at a decent price. ...
