Re: Adventures in bit twiddling.

If you mean the modulo trick to compact the bits, yeah! It's a good one. I remembered there was *some* way to do it but I had to dig around a bit to remember how it worked.

Re: What is wrong with my metatile routine?

Also, don't calculate this during v-blank (inside the NMI). Yeah... and don't try and save memory by reading attribute table back back from the PPU either. In the end I had > 1k of memory sitting unused, and I wrote this monstrosity to save 64 bytes. O_o (Though it did work, and was kinda fun to wr...

Adventures in bit twiddling.

I kind of love bit twiddling hacks. They are great little puzzles to figure out, and are a lot like trigonomotric identities. Both are kind of esoteric, but they can save you a lot of work if you know when to apply them to simplify something bigger. I recently had some fun rewritting the png <--> ch...

Re: Suggestion for good ca65 game source code to read?

Lizzard's assembler source is on Github.

I also have my little Pixler library on Github, but it's not that well commented.

Over Crispd (GGJ 2019)

The Global Game Jam is a wrap! I successfully convinced somebody to work an NES game again this year. It didn't turn out as magically good as the game I worked on last year , but we finished it in less than 48 hours. :D Basically Similar to Overcooked, but you are editing genes. Like Overcooked, it'...

Global Game Jam?

Anybody else planning on participating in the Global Game Jam this weekend? We gotta represent! :D https://globalgamejam.org/ Last year there were only 3 NES games. (!) Only two of which were playable, and only one that you could realistically play for more than 20 seconds. I was pretty proud of the...

Re: 2018 NESDev Compo Rules/Guidelines

Is there an official way to enter the contest? My entry is almost complete, but I'm not sure where to go to cross the i's and dot the t's.

Re: Critical Match

Now with sounds! (and some more polish)

I updated the links in the original post. Feedback is very welcome. This is the first time I've tried creating sounds for the NES. I might have space for one or two more? Still have ~500 bytes left for music. Might be cutting it really close...

Re: Critical Match

I added a tutorial mode. It's kinda basic, but I managed to squeeze it into ~500 bytes so I still have 1.5kB left for sounds, music and other polish and still fit in a single 16 kb unrom bank. :D

Re: Critical Match

Progress on some menu graphics. A little bland, but I still have a couple dozen tiles left to spice things up with. I'm not quite sure what else to add though... Maybe have the player character running around?

Re: Critical Match

I played around with the graphics a bit more tonight. The theme before could be described as a game that looks like it's being played on a random piece of 80's electronics. I'm not much of an artist, so I'm sort of flailing around until something looks ok... lol I changed it up a bit more so there i...

Re: Critical Match

http://files.slembcke.net/upshot/upshot_TgzcuuiD.png I haven't had as much time as I'd liked to work on this in December, but I finally made a breakthrough in the gameplay. The previous rules were really fragile. It was pretty fun and fast paced in certain conditions, but really easy to get it stuc...

Re: how to help fight forum spam

The questions were then just "Copy paste the green words from the following web page". I guess that might work on a forum with no blind members.[/quote] Sadly it didn't really work regardless of people's abilities. :( Does PHPBB support first post moderation? Years ago that worked pretty well on th...

Re: how to help fight forum spam

Really? My experience in the past is that more questions don't seem to help. An attacker would only need to answer one question before they can automate the process and brute force it. I even tried doing it using a webpage full of GUIDs in different styles. The questions were then just "Copy paste t...
