Re: Why did Sega CD games have lower quality non-music samples than Genesis games?

I seem to remember reading on Plutiedev that Sega CD sound drivers used the PCM chip and the FM chip instead of the FM chip and the PSG.

If it were "hold Select+Run for 60 frames", or it were I+II+Select+Run like the gesture in Game Boy games and NES falling block games, it wouldn't have been so easy to trigger by accident.

It would depend on your definition of emulation, but FPGA implementations of consoles are often not considered emulation. FPGA clones use emulation on a highly-parallel platform. Its biggest plus over an emulator on a conventional computer is that it can guarantee latency in the tens of nanoseconds...

Re: Super Mario Bros.: Why all the floating money?

It's not like people generally notice their dream is a dream. Lucid dreaming is a rare thing, and does not reflect the majority of dreams people have. In the context of telling an afterlife from a dream, the longer a dream continues, the more likely one is to become lucid enough to realize that the...

I didn't know Casper was therapist all along. Now his creepy interactions with that human kid make much more sense... Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) is therapist whose daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) has befriended Casper (voice of Malachi Pearson). Like Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) in the...

Can the S-WRAM be replaced with a commodity RAM behind some CPLD implementing the "all banks but $7F are $7E" behavior and whatever is needed for the autoincrementing port on the B bus?

Re: Super Mario Bros.: Why all the floating money?

But does it really make a difference if you don't know if ghosts exists or not? How would you know to what extent ghosts could directly affect the physical world in the first place? If they can affect the physical world, then there'd be evidence of it. Usually lingering spirits are the spirits of d...

On the title screen, the mouth being on the tangent of the shading boundary makes the head look more angular and less of the Sans-from-Undertale roundness that the other angles are obviously going for. Has this been fixed in the past year?

Re: Super Mario Bros.: Why all the floating money?

Death has much meaning in real life because we can't prove that ghosts doesn't exist and because we have no way to know what waits the other side of Styx. It could be that on the other side of Styx is "Kilroy was here". There are dinosaur ghosts in SMW (I forgot their name), fishing boo is a lakitu...

Re: Super Mario Bros.: Why all the floating money?

If I can no-clip through everything I'm not sure I would want to go back to human life. Depends on two things. One is under what conditions a dead person turns into a ghost in your continuity. In ours, death appears to be final from all physical evidence. When Mario dies, on the other hand, he rest...

What the PPU does: One scanline before a frame starts, $2002 bit 6 ($40 place value) becomes 0. When an opaque pixel of sprite 0 and an opaque pixel of the background are drawn at the same position, $2002 bit 6 becomes 1. This event during the frame is called the "sprite 0 hit", as described in NESd...

Re: Super Mario Bros.: Why all the floating money?

The main problem I have with Nikku's argument is that he says coins are as large as Mario's head, which I don't believe. That's just how they are represented in the game. Case in point: In DiC's animated series adaptations of SMB series, the coins aren't quite that big. At least the coins are a lit...

The filebrowser has to sniff the content to get a sense of its data. Most data has at least some kind of descriptor in its early bytes.
It's a matter of having some way for applications on a system to tell file browsers on the same system what descriptors exist.

Re: Determining a file's content type without extension

My opinion? Figure out how to determine what your data is without relying on its filename. Most data is obviously distinct enough for this to work, but it’s going to be easier if everyone is playing by the same rules. A file browser should be able to launch applications based on the content, not th...
