Since the PRG RAM and the CHR RAM are both 8kb, was there any mapper that let you bankswitch the two?

To be clear, not separately like most of them, but with each other. Switch the tiles to cpu-writable space, write them even during rendering, switch back to CHR.

No, but the idea has been discussed several times here.

Edit: apparently the MMC5 does, in a limited away.

AFAIK, MMC5 ExRAM is the only one that can be used in this manner... and only for nametables.

But given the four mappers that support moving memory from the CHR banks to the NT banks, any emulator that doesn't treat the PPU's nametables and pattern tables as the same memory class is asking to screw things up later on.
