has anyone tried to 'modify' the NES-002, such as 'moving' the transformer from it, to inside the NES-101 case; and leaving a simple plug such as what is used on most D V D players and clock radios? in so much as finding a small and compact version that will fit inside the console and convert the 120 volts to the nintendos required 9 volts at 1.3 amperes.

I think one reason Nintendo made the adapter external is so that not as much of the product has to be certified (e.g. UL listed) for high voltage (e.g. 100-220 V) operation. Certifying the supply (NES-002) was probably a lot cheaper than certifying the Control Deck (NES-001/101).
Myself, I'd prefer a USB micro-B supply, with a near-5 V to 5 V regulator in the Control Deck. That way, any USB dedicated charging port could be used. It'd also save power compared to the 7805 linear regulator that consoles of the time used.
