Such a funny idea for a game, but downloading it only to experience a NES-based text terminal sure is disappointing...

So thumbs up as far as jokes go. But if you really want this to be a ROM I'd load into my powerpak when having friends over for a party, then you need to add some bells and whistles to it.

Things off the top of my mind would be:

* The ability to choose from a selected number of russian celebrities with different listed combat abilities (none of which would make any difference to the game itself of course) You can just convert public domain photos if you don't feel aesthetic, doesn't really matter if they look crappy as long as they're somewhat recognizable.

* Suggestive music... think street fighter 2 with player select, VS screen fanfare and battle tunes. Here's an area I *know* you do well in, so there's no excuse for leaving it out.

* 1 player tournament mode maybe? Classic cliche of the selected player traveling to the country of each opponent, and winning the tournament becomes a subject for probability statistics.

And gore of course... "paint capsule" sounds pretty lame. Make some good use of the NES palette's poor red color! ;)

Interesting ideas. Anyone up for a collaboration? I've got another 6.5 KB of CHR and 14.5 KB of PRG to fill. The trouble is that I don't live in Russia, and CaH4e3 hasn't been active lately, so I don't know what kind of Russian celebrities I'd include.

Unfortunately I'm deeply engaged in a project of my own right now... it's a tool I believe you'll all find useful though, once it's ready for a first public release. Getting there little by little... :)

I had worldwide celebrities in mind, either living or dead. So in other words, if you don't know them, they don't qualify. Former soviet dictators is a theme that always works, even if it's a tad cliche.

Btw, Any reason why you feel the need to limit yourself to NROM for this project? CNROM or UNROM would certainly give you more freedom...

This actually sounds like an incredibly fun party game idea, but perhaps a less gruesome overtone would be more fitting with the spirit of classic NES games.

I tried your demo game, and it was a blast!

Still no graphics, but I've updated Russian Roulette with more comments and compatibility with new versions of build tools.

Changes in 0.02:
  • Updated for compatibility with cc65 2.14 series
  • pilbmp2nes updated for Python 2/3 compatibility
  • Factored out some PPU logic into subroutines
  • Switched to CRC16 randomizer
  • CHR ROM included with .incbin for fewer build steps
  • Removed some alignment padding
  • A few other micro-optimizations
  • More comments

I'm not russian, but I suggest Vladmir Putin.
Putin Bear
Putin Bear
By the way, if you play a little bit with the word Putin in portuguese, (make it be "putinho", what is kind of what it sounds in portuguese) you get something as "pissed off" or a perjorative word for "gay male".

It's the same in French: "Putin" pronounced with French phonics sounds exactly like putain (whore). Thus francophone news organizations have to transliterate "Путин" as "Poutine", which sounds like chips, cheese, and gravy to anyone from eastern Canada.

So... it was not only in portuguese that his name gets kind of messed up. :-)
How the hell did he get on top of that bear?
I think it was with the help of Photoshop!!

Maybe this pic can be transformed into his character select portrait.

It's not just the "news organizations", that's just the standard way to romanize russian words in french / all names in -ин are romanized in "-ine". "Raspoutine" has been romanized as such more than 100 years ago.

At first I tought it's weird how it's written in english and it looks like they're calling him (Putin) a bitch, although I eventually got used to that.

Maybe krzysiobal could give some suggestions for characters.
AFAIK he's from Poland. Not Russia, but a lot closer than me. :)
