Finally got around to trying this. It's a pretty cool demo. Quite short and easy having beaten the original game, but that's understandable.
The main critique I would have is that moving in the world felt more like a chore rather than having that nice feeling of exploration as in the original game. I'm not sure how much it would be possible to improve on this in a 2D game, though. (I'd expect improved audiovisuals would help somewhat, but who knows how much.) Might be interesting to try the same idea in the context of a 2D platformer.
I also noted the same minor issues with controls as rainwarrior.
