Hey everyone,
I just wanted to let you know about the PSIO.
PSIO is a cartridge that plug's into the back of your PlayStation 1 console, which will let you play your backed up PlayStation 1 games from an SD card.
It will also allow you to boot and run code you have programmed from an SD card on the actual PlayStation 1 console itself, making it a must have tool for homebrewers, developers and most importantly, gamers.

Imho, that's a great idea! Hope it'll happen soon. What do you think?

it will be great once it gets released
Re: PSIO - Playing PS1 games from an SD card!
Hopefully it gets released eventually, CD is such a unreliable medium. I never knew (until I saw this project some months ago) that it would be possible to do this over the parallel port.

the psx's parallel port can achieve ~3mb/sec , that's what the psio's maker saidthefox wrote:Hopefully it gets released eventually, CD is such a unreliable medium. I never knew (until I saw this project some months ago) that it would be possible to do this over the parallel port.
Re: PSIO - Playing PS1 games from an SD card!
Really, now, this thing acts exactly like a CD so that the game runs no differently at all? I imagine this hooks into the PSX OS or something, similar to how the things on PS2 allow playing games from the hard disk (which also behaves differently and breaks some games, requiring lots of workarounds). So this response seems deceptive.FAQ on psio website wrote:Emulators are slow, and are not 100% accurate.
You can not emulate hardware in software perfectly. PSIO is not emulated, and it is the real deal.
Re: PSIO - Playing PS1 games from an SD card!
The PS2's DVD drive defaults to acting like a 2x CD drive, despite being able to read CDs much faster than 2x, because some games crash if the CD drive is faster than the original PlayStation's 2x. Homebrew games designed for PSIO won't break, but some copies of proprietary commercial games are likely to break.blargg wrote:Really, now, this thing acts exactly like a CD so that the game runs no differently at all?FAQ on psio website wrote:You can not emulate hardware in software perfectly. The terminology "PS1" may be confusing for anything related to PSIO because the PSone intentionally dropped both the parallel port and the serial port. Even the last revision of the original PlayStation before the PSone (the SCPH-9000 series) dropped the parallel port because only unlicensed accessories were using it.
Is an original PlayStation capable of reading and writing PlayStation 2 memory cards, or is there a hardware limitation? I wonder if this could be used as yet another Free McBoot bootstrap.

Q:
A:I guess compatibility is likely to be a serious issue with this device. I hope I'm wrong..
The PS2 has HDD support built into the console, and yet it still has problems with many games when using HDAdvance/HDLoader.
we make hardware emulator, it works like original dsp does, it actully repalce original dsp by fpga, with the same set of registers and data buffers, so compability can be 100%.
playing on ps2 with hdd by hd-advance, OPL and etc: - is based on sofware level, by replacing main function of CD and CDFS drivers (irx's)
Re: PSIO - Playing PS1 games from an SD card!
Apparently the I/O port may have Left and Right audio too. So I suppose if the BIOS calls for all disc functions are patched it's perfectly doable to run games from an SD card. I'm not sure how the Decoder works which handles the .XA or FMV video but if it's fed from the CPU reading the disc then I guess that's no problem either. I hope the project comes to market. Particularly with 32GB SD cards being so common and pretty cheap now. And I hope that compatibility is high.
Re: PSIO - Playing PS1 games from an SD card!
Some months ago, I was made aware of a similar project for the Dreamcast (dknute.livejournal.com), but not having one of those I'm far more excited by this. Of course, now I'll need to resolder the controller/save card jacks...
Re: PSIO - Playing PS1 games from an SD card!
I wish I had the skill to do this sort of thing. I'd totally make a sega cd and pc engine cd version...thefox wrote:Hopefully it gets released eventually, CD is such a unreliable medium.
