Magickid Goo Goo / Mapper 190

Post by dobbo2k » Mon Jan 06, 2020 1:34 pm

Hi everyone, I'd like to build a reproduction of the unlicensed Korean game Magickid Goo Goo. It uses mapper 190 as described here https://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/INES_Mapper_190

The notes on the page mention the components used but I don't know how they all connect up. Does anyone here know? Is there an existing board I can use to piggyback? Or would I have to create my own board from scratch? Thanks

You're going to have to create your own board from scratch, or else mapper hack this to ... uh, MMC3 or Sunsoft 3/4 should be ok.

The 74'670s used in this board are pretty expensive nowadays too. You may need a radically different design from the original.

Ok, thanks for the response. Unfortunately I have no idea how to wire up the original, let alone a re-design! And a mapper hack is out of my skill set.

Be advised that all those chips (except RAM and ROMS), diodes an pull-downs can be replaced with just one small CPLD (epm3064 or xc9572)

i have mapper hacks for this for both mmc3 and sunsoft4. they are for the most part working but i don't remember if i ever finished them. my pc crashed and i lost my working files for them, so i only have the patched roms i had on a powerpak card.

anyway i think both are doable. mmc3 i might have had issues with the bank routines taking to long at some point. the sunsoft4 version i had varying results in emulators and powerpak that i chalked up to implementation issues. i never got around to putting it on a cart.

According to the previously described hardware info at mapper 190 page, it must be that two 74670 latches CHR bank and PAL latches PRG bank and generates other signals (for RAM/ROM and 670).

The original cartridge used PAL16R4, which assumes registered mode for the 4 bits of PRG-bank and they are also tristate.
To confirm my hypothesis, I tried to mimic it using GAL16V8 and it worked great.
