Dr. Mario stage clear music cuts out

Post by zeroone »

In Dr. Mario, after you clear a stage, it prompts the player to press START to advance to the next level ("STAGE CLEAR | TRY NEXT"). On that screen, it plays music that cuts out with a strange chirp after about about 10 seconds. Is that a bug in Dr. Mario? And, if so, is there any way to listen to the full song?

The NSF displays the same behavior - perhaps it's a bug in the music engine?

Also, it's 22 seconds, not 10.

I wouldn't presume that's a bug. It sounds perfectly intentional to me. Several of the tracks have funny little musical "chirp" noises.

Perhaps the viruses infected not only the patient, but also the music engine...

It appears to be a stylistic choice by Mr.Tanaka, since the same weirdness shows up in the SNES version, Tetris & Dr.Mario. If you'd like though, the prototype version of the game, named Virus, contains versions of the jingles that don't end abruptly.

Edit: Corrected link. I knew it was one of the protos. :P

The early prototype versions of Dr. Mario (Virus) plays the song longer, and eventually loops.

That link behaves oddly. Cut and paste works, but clicking yields "Dr._Mario_NES_/" rather than parentheses…

That and the fact that the bleep at the end of the stage clear music used for "Fever" and "Off" sounds like the sound effect for pressing Start in Tetris.
