The exact moment you were drawn into a game.

Post by whicker »

Kinda trying something different here. We obviously love video games...

Given a certain game, what was the exact moment(s) you were drawn in and convinced: yes this is a good game? Could be a scene, a level, a boss, a moment with friends, etc.

For me:

Star Fox:
The beginning takeoff intro gave me chills (and my older brother mocked me for it, his exact bullyish words: "oh, you know you love it"). But the real, exact moment I knew SNES Starfox was an incredible game was when in the 2nd stage the music became tense and all the asteroids started flying towards me. I was completely absorbed into the universe of the game from then on.

Super Mario Galaxy:
I had some tinglings in Battlerock galaxy, but that and everything else was kind of a grind. That is, until, the Volcano Eruption in Melty Molten Galaxy. Call me a sucker, but again the change in music, the camera pan to see eruption and the plasma bridge between the two doomed gravity locked planets, and these burning moons in-between, the crashed UFO's... it's like this is amazing what's happening here?!

I could go on and on, but what about your experiences?

First thing that comes to mind for me was Final Fantasy 2 (IV) SNES. That prologue theme is probably still my favorite SNES song, even though it was on NES first.

I still remember a "holy shit.." moment playing Nethack, when early on in the game, my pet kitten stepped onto a polymorph trap and became my pet Lich. If you're not familiar, that's one of the most dangerous and rare creatures in the game and it was the first time I'd seen one. Pets stay tame by eating, and Liches are unable to eat. So this guy would be at my side, as soon as he detected an enemy anywhere in the level (usually long before I would see it), he would teleport to it, kill it instantly, then teleport back to me. So he was gaining levels like crazy while I could barely even get a hit in on anything. It was a little unnerving, I had to ditch him eventually. But there's a lot of crazy stuff that can happen in that game, so it's hard to say there was a specific moment.

LOZ:OOT the moment the piano started playing
Rainbow Islands - The loading screen with ocean loader 4 ( didn't know it was 4 and generic at the time though )
FF6 - the slow walk with mode 7, the snow, the mechs, the sad tune that haunts me to this day
Mayhem In Monsterland - the first time you hit charge mode @_@
Zork - There moment the idea of text adventure and the massive size and interaction possibilities it offered hit me
Chrono Trigger - Double Tech!!!
Secret Of Evermore - the alchemy screen

Silent Hill got me pretty good with the concept of a creepy abandoned town that you could explore "at will" (it was more than most PS1 games I had played at least), could never put it down (and I'm always revisiting it from time to time).
Gran Turismo 4: never played nor knew the previous ones, when the intro music started playing I knew it was a special game.
Resident Evil Outbreak: Classic RE? ONLINE?!? Thank god for obsrv.org and their reverse engineered fan server.
This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit.

Most all of the time, I either decide I like a game already by watching the commercial or something, or I've just played the game forever and don't remember specifically how I got into it.

The game I had a time where I decided I really liked it was when I was looking through my 500+ game collection of SNES roms and found Super R-Type and R-Type III, because I found R-Type DX at my cousin's house and it was decent. I played Super R-Type for a minute, and then R-Type III, which obviously, I was 1000x more impressed with.

The intro animation for level 1 is where I knew the game was really going to be great. (Unfortunately, I couldn't find a gif for the whole sequence, but this part alone is still awesome.)

If I had to pinpoint a game that got me into SNES programming, it was probably this one.

Super Metroid, honestly the moment the intro sequence transitioned to the title, that bass got me. I hadn't even started playing and I was hooked.

Final Fantasy 7, when Cloud cross-dressed to seduce the Don; golden moment that told me that this game was gonna be worth it.

Final Fantasy 9, when I got out of that forest at the beginning and into the first city and got to have some fun. That whole game excited me. It was pretty short though, due to most of the disc space being cutscenes. (Only FF game I've beaten with most of my characters' levels in the 30's iirc).

Fallout New Vegas, when I reached New Vegas and a lot of the earlier story just kinda clicked.

Fallout 4 when reaching the Institute; same reasoning behind FNV.

Actually Fallout 3 too, I don't remember what I even enjoyed about that game but it just blew me away at the time. I probably got hooked when blowing up Megaton.

The Sims 3 when I accidentally killed a family member because she somehow got into the garage where there was no exit. It became much more enjoyable when I got rid of my stock CPU fan, because that game is HEAVY.

I hope to get hooked into Dragon Quest V for the SNES as soon as I figure out a good way to get rid of that stupid noise that plays every time text displays. It hurts my head, and so does trying to disassemble a SNES rom.

If you use windows, and the ROM is LoROM ( I think I only support LoROM at the moment, been a while ) you might like to try my Super Generator https://www.dropbox.com/s/pauuzipisc8nb ... S.zip?dl=0 it is an interactive dissasembler for SNES, based upon Regenerator. It has a few extra features to help make SNES less painful. Its early and not finished so probably has a few bugs.

Zelda 4, the moment when Link is sitting with Marin on the beach before having to escort her to the animal village. It's like something just opened there, that gave the world a lot more life and substance, it really opened my eyes to something I'd never seen in a video game before.

There are many that drawn me, just like you guys.
Basically I start to "understand" the game's mechanics and find it pretty interesting and fun.
It's like you "learn" what the "language" game programmers were trying to make the game "speak", and just find it cool.
Sometimes, as a kid I just got very impressed first with in-game voices and cartoon-like graphics, like on Turtles IV, or the history as in Xenogears or purelly the gameplay, as in Battletoads and the MegaMan, Ninja Gainden, Castlevania, etc series.
Then the things I talked before happens.

Wow, that's like 5 seconds after powering on.

I was probably blushing during that whole sequence. As for me, despite having played thru Chrono Trigger completely, at that point I thought most of FF7 was going to happen in Midgar. But then with that Shinra tower battle and crazy motorcycle escape and subsequent cutscene after the crane rope down to the outside... I realized the game was literally just getting started when it showed the world map for the first time.

Reminds me of Killer Instinct when I accidentally(?) did an Ultra Combo and then a finishing Ultimate with TJ Combo to my younger brother. It's literally the only time he had tears in his eyes from a fighting game.
