Where is Donkey Kong (US Set 2)?

Post by DementedPurple »

I've scavenged every corner of the internet trying to find this one ROM, with no luck. I found some parts of it, but never the full game. It's either missing a few of the ROMs or it's been taken down by Nintendo. Do you know where I could find this?

Might this be related to the concept of parent and child ROMs?

For example, when you want to play a specific revision of "Street Fighter II", you need the ROM that's just called "sf2" (which is the latest world revision) and then the ROM of the specific revision you want to play, for example "sf2ua" (the first US revision).
Put both zip files into the ROMs folder, start MAME with the name of the version you want to play (sf2ua) and MAME will also search for the missing files in the parent ROM (sf2).

So, if you find parts of "Donkey Kong" US set 2, but never the whole game, try to put US set 1 (or whatever the ROM called "dkong" contains) into the folder as well.

I knew that since it is technically the same game, So it would make sense to only have the ROMs that are different, but since I'm not an expert on the inner workings of Donkey Kong, I have no idea which files to include. I tried putting the entire ROM of set 1 in the set 2 folder, which had the same results. Would I just have to check each files contents with a hex editor and see if they are the same? Well, I probably wouldn't have to do that and instead drag the files that aren't in the the set 2 folder into the set 2 folder.

You can look up what you need in a database: http://adb.arcadeitalia.net/dettaglio_m ... ame=dkongo

If it's not a "parent" ROM, then look in the "clone" section to see what its parent is.

Download the parent. Put both zips in your MAME roms folder, and when you try to open dkongo.zip it will find its parent dkong.zip and use files from it as needed. Don't unzip them or try to reorganize the files inside.

Also, you need to make sure that you have the correct ROM versions with the correct MAME version.

The MAME developers don't care about backwards compatibility, so required ROMs might change with every new release.
For example, MAME 0.127 required less files to play "Street Fighter II" than today's version.
In some cases, whole ROM files are completely renamed.

If MAME still complains that ROMs are missing, you either need to find a site that has the most recent ROMs. Or you need to download an older version of MAME that still matches your ROMs.

Don't expect every version of MAME to play the same ROMs in the way Nesticle and Nestopia play the same "Super Mario Bros." or "Mega Man" ROM.
