I think the whole esport model is a failure; Games with a truly high skill-gap don't get as widely popular as something like Overwatch because most people don't like getting repeatedly stomped on and, God forbid, having to practice to get good at a game.

Ball sports also have a skill gap, but consistency over time allows players to master a ball sport before it ceases to exist.

Take basketball. College players in NCAA Division I will curb stomp casual street ballers, NBA players even more so. But the difference here is that the game remains consistent from elementary school through college, giving players a chance to grow up with the game and spend years getting better. It takes an estimated 10,000 hours to become an expert in something, and at 2 hours a day, that's roughly the time from turning double digit years old to graduating from college. If on the other hand the game is constantly changing out from under players, as in the case of proprietary games whose online multiplayer gets shut off in favor of their sequels, nobody will reach that 10,000 hour mark.

Has anyone considered making the game streams have no game audio output and then putting the video output from the consoles through some post processing output so that it doesn't retain the same quality or likeness? The players of the game should surely still be able to discern who they are fighting and which characters they have as long as the video response time isn't lagging. They could just say that they're playing "Smub."
