Swearwords in devlogs as metric for postmortem

Post by GradualGames »

To get an idea of the relative difficulty/scope of each of my past NES projects I counted the number of swearwords in each of my devlogs (title of current game not shown):

Damn:
  • -NomolosDevlog.txt: 5
    -OwliaDevlog.txt: 25
    -(current game).txt: 7
Shit:
  • -NomolosDevlog.txt: 24
    -OwliaDevlog.txt: 25
    -(current game).txt: 4
Fuck:
  • -NomolosDevlog.txt: 12
    -OwliaDevlog.txt: 34
    -(current game).txt: 7
Owlia was definitely the biggest scope/most difficulty I've attempted so far. There seems to be a correlation here.

So that I can produce comparable results for the comments in my source trees, is there a standard list of English profanities other than the late George Carlin's? He admitted his was incomplete because it intentionally excluded words like "ass", "bitch", and "cock" that also have wholesome meanings (donkey, female dog, male domestic fowl).

There is one curse word in a filename in The Curse of Possum Hollow.

Hah I have no idea. I just picked the three I personally most commonly use when I'm blathering to myself in my devlogs. Thankfully overall they are relatively rarely used, but the correlation to project difficulty is amusing nonetheless. Haha

Haha, you inspired me...

There weren't as many as I thought there'd be, since I've mostly been logging my progress for just me without the intent of it being public/professional
  • Shit - 2
    Damn - 2
    Ass - 2
    Hell - 2
    Fuck - 0 (Surprised me)
There were, however, a few actually offensive (albeit used in jest) words that I won't list here...
