Some Finnish NES games

Post by dougeff »

I ran into this game, which recently was made in Finland.

https://youtu.be/lSRQ-2zeXqA

I don't understand a word of this, so... I guess you use a zapper gun at some point.

And, I guess the same team made a game last year about sitting in a sauna.

Edit

And this game, which defies description*...

Wasn't sure this phrase translates well.
defy description-
to be so unusual or remarkable as to be impossible to describe.

I was unable to translate this title

Juhannusolumppialaiset

If you throw a y in there...
Juhannusolymppialaiset
...it seems to say something like "midsummer Olympics".

Edit.
Interesting side note. The programmer, Arto4000, has been doing Finnish translations of NES games over at RHDN.

Finnish has harmony in its round vowels (everything but "e" and "i"). If a word contains a back round vowel, like "a", "o", or "u", it can't also contain a front round vowel "ä", "ö", or "y". Thus "olymppia" becomes "olumppia" because of the "o".

I can't speak finnish, but this should be true. At least Norway and Denmark celebrate st:john's (johannus) day july the 24th, while midsummer's day on is on saturday the 20th to 26th, depending on year. These have been somewhat interchangeable and connected but the former state church here in Sweden separated the two in 1952. People generally celebrate midsummer here, as an indirect result, i would assume.

Edit: It just struck me, we have this tradition where students who stay in town or at the dormitory over the summer get together around midsummer to play sports while drunk.

You can download the first one, Midsummer sauna, by clicking the pirate gif:

Perkele has three games: Winter war, Grill fighting, and Revenge of the Ringed Seal of Saimaa.

I find it interesting that that site seems to be spoofing the Lucas Arts logo.

"Juhannusolympialaiset" would be the proper spelling for "midsummer Olympics". They just corrupted it to "olumppialaiset" in an attempt to be funny. (Also, beer is "olut" in Finnish, which may have inspired the name.)

AasiPelit = "DonkeyGames"
