The stylized portraits they use in the intro for the "beyond stranger things" show - Are those apple ][ graphics or something?
(warning, don't watch it beyond the intro if you're watching ST2 and don't want spoilers)

i don't know if it's supposed to be anything in particular, but it reminds me of the old 'turtle graphics' program...

It could be one of many home computers hooked up to a green monochrome screen.
Apple II would have the vertical line patterns instead of colors, and so would IBM CGA.
However, as for the mostly solid areas with black vertical stripes, there's no system that would have done something like that. (edit: seems to be four levels of grayscale presented as vertical stripes, so the mostly solid areas were level 3)
Horizontal resolution seems to be 128 solid pixels wide, or 512 if you go by the quarter pixels seen.

I would say its MGA but probably not strictly following the "limits"

The thing is i've never used anything earlier than my 286 suitcase/laptop which converted 16 colours to a monochrome LCD display which was pixel sharp and 1:1, iirc. So i don't know my waters here... i just like the line technique.
But apparently MGA allowed for 720×348 (a multiple of 4, which omits 2 blank lines of the screens' 350) at a pixel ratio of 1:1.55 in graphics mode, and could emulate CGA almost completely on hardware for monochrome phosphor screens.

The authentic IBM Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA) doesn't support graphics. It supports only text mode and has hardwired CHR ROM, as RAM for a frame buffer was too expensive at the time. The Hercules Graphics Card is an MDA clone with a 720x348-pixel graphics mode.

Hercules PAR is much closer to 5:6 than to 2:3 — the DAR is roughly 3:2.FrankenGraphics wrote:But apparently MGA allowed for 720×348 (a multiple of 4, which omits 2 blank lines of the screens' 350) at a pixel ratio of 1:1.55 in graphics mode
That citation for 1:1.55 assumes a 4:3 display, which isn't even close to true.
Try looking up screenshots of Microsoft Flight Simulator running in Hercules mode (or even just set it up in dosbox)
(edit: MSFS assumes a PAR of 3:4, for a DAR of exactly 3:2 – hardware video; dosbox video)

Not an exact match or anything, but it reminds me slightly of the extended pseudo-graphical characters on the Galaksija computer.

Now that you mantion it, I can see it. Good call.nitro2rk01 wrote:Not an exact match or anything, but it reminds me slightly of the extended pseudo-graphical characters on the test boosters list Galaksija computer.

Galaksija - That's this one, right?
