New 8-bit Heroes documentary/film

Post by koitsu »

Has anyone seen it? I saw it this evening (bought it on Amazon). If you have: thoughts?

Edit: there was some mention of it in this thread, but not really relevant to the thread subject at hand, so I thought I'd start one and ask. And yes, I saw it this evening.

I haven't seen it. Am I in it? Or was my scene cut?

The sequence with you and Memblers at Game On! is present. That is (IMO) one of the "hinge points" of the film, since its presented in such a way that indicates Joe wouldn't have been able to keep progressing on his game had he not gotten guidance from you/Joey. There's a soft jab in the ribs over your attire as well. :P

There's a sequence around 40:30, shortly before Memblers' and Tepples' segment, where the nesdev site/forum shows up in screenshots. Some PM partial screenshots are shown, with monikers. Those folks are:

- tokumaru
- Kasumi
- rainwarrior
- koitsu

kevtris's segment is around 1:05:40, pertains solely to NES audio and the NSF file format, and is disappointingly short (around 20 seconds). Hopefully it's longer on the BluRay (see below).

The folks in the film, in order of appearance, other than some of the folks that worked directly on the game itself. Apologies if I missed anyone (I think I may have):

- Joe's wife
- Patrick Scott Patterson
- John White
- E.B.D. Holland
- Rob Bryant
- Frank Westphal
- Derek Andrews
- Samuel Claiborn
- Norman Caruso
- Eli Galindo
- James Deighan
- Andrew Marsh
- Amanda Whittle VanHiel
- Rachel Simone Weil
- Jordan "Sivak" Ordorica
- Joe's attourney
- Jon-Paul Dyson
- Dain Anderson
- Sean Velasco
- Matt Barker
- James Rolfe
- Brian "bunnyboy" Parker
- Brad "rainwarrior" Smith
- Damian "Tepples" Yerrick
- Joe "Memblers" Parsell
- Paul Malloy
- John Lester
- Piers Anthony
- John Hancock
- Luke Fields
- Brendan Becker
- David Sardy
- Kevin Hanley
- Mike Winterbauer
- Marc Ericksen
- Mark Soderwall
- Kevin "kevtris" Horton
- Jake Kaufman
- Tommy Tallarico
- Bill Hecklick
- Jherin Miller
- Adam F. Goldberg
- Pat Contri
- Patrick McQuaide
- David Markey
- Howard Phillips

From "With Appearances By" during credit roll and not mentioned above:

- Juan Carlos Larrea
- Andrew Reitano

From "Also Starring" during credit roll, not mentioned above, duplicates removed:

- Erin Johnson
- Olivia Wilson
- Dylan Jones
- Sherrie Mckinley
- Rob Mihara
- Chris Trimiew
- Ed Stastny
- Lawrence Haber
- Jessey Foster
- Sylvia Swann
- Elizabeth Smith
- Tyler Corbin Lariscy
- Justine Hamer
- Randy Gerson
- Rachel Jones
- Daniel Mark Neil II
- Hannah Fierman
- Joel Musch
- Courtney Burke

Finally, the BluRay edition apparently has additional content. I asked Joe on Twitter what that contained, and this was his response: "There are about 40 mins of extended interviews, an entire cut 15 minute sequence that's pretty fun, and a never seen 40 min or so featurette of the abandoned doc about the influence of the Legend of Zelda on pop culture, which the way its cut makes a perfect lead in to 8bit :-)"

I saw a version of it a year ago but I don't know how much it may have changed since then. Digital access hasn't been delivered to kickstarter backers yet, AFAIK, so I thought this wasn't out yet? Is it already available for purchase or something?

Yeah, it's available for rent or purchase on Amazon, at least in the US (unsure about Canada) and UK, as well as on Vimeo.

Picked up the BluRay last week, got it today. I've only a BR drive for my PC, so I can't "play" BRs like one would on a native settop home entertainment BR player. That said, I thought I'd cover who was in the "additional content" portions:

Fifteen minute segment during Los Angeles trip:

- Erik R. Norris (friend from school)
- Robert McCallum (filmmaker; Nintendo Quest)
- Adam F. Goldberg

Hour long segment of people who were interviewed but didn't make the cut of the full movie:

- James Rolfe
- John Lester
- Norman Caruso
- John Hancock (collector)
- Tommy Tallarico
- Jared Petty (IGN)
- Samuel Claiborn (IGN)
- Mark Soderwall (Color Dreams)
- Several students of Frederick Douglass High School (previous place where for 6 years Joe taught game design)
- Juan Carlos Larrea (343 Industries)
- Mike Winterbaur
- Marc Ericksen
- Adam F. Goldberg
- John White (nesdev/homebrewer)
- Pat Contri (PatTheNESPunk)
- Greg Toussaint (childhood friend)
- Piers Anthony (novelist)
- David Sardy
- EDB Holland (nesdev/homebrewer)
- Bill Hecklick (nesdev/homebrewer)
- Collectorvision Games (4 individuals)
- Kevin "kevtris" Horton
- Some additional BTS footage about the filming

Additional 38-minute footage of a documentary talking about "how" The Legend of Zelda impacted society in general:

- Several folks whose names I couldn't quite pin down
- Zack Cataldo (romhacker / Zelda Outlands)
- Joel Musch / Hannah Fierman (The Hero of Time film)
- Tom Mcfarlin, Christopher Ames
- Christopher Ames, Christopher Fenner, John Saddington (software development company, 8BIT LLC)
- Chris Veal (8-bit art exhibit; Hart Deer Doogallery)
- David Hellman (graphic novelist; Second Quest)
- Sam Balcomb (Rainfall Productions, did IGN's Legend of Zelda trailer)
- Ryan Thompson, Adam Chatani (Games Art And Music (GAAM) Legend of Zelda art exhibit)
- Jason Letkiewicz (MTV, director/writer)
- Adam F. Goldberg
- Shawn Witt, Dawn Rivers (Harmonix Music Systems)
- Jason Rappaport (Zelda Universe)
