Flat Earth Convention
So I just came across this on the internet. Apparently there is a group of people out there who think that he Earth is flat and not spherical. Just watch the youtube video. I was speechless.

Sadly, it's mostly just a publicity stunt by now - by watching their video and talking about it, you're only helping them.

Re: Flat Earth Convention
The flat earth society has members all on top of the pancake.
Re: Flat Earth Convention
I was kinda shocked when I first heard of this, but this is actually not that much more absurd than a lot of other beliefs out there. People are weird, so try not to put much thinking into this.
Re: Flat Earth Convention
I don't mind if one or two people say "hmm, I wonder if the earth is flat or not?", but what I do mind is organized ignorance.
Sure the earth looks flat locally, but globally it is spherical. It's a somewhat abstract idea, but most people are able to handle this without issues. These people though...

Re: Flat Earth Convention
I can't understand how people believe this...
I wonder how they can explain away a scenario like a airplane, if it had enough fuel, being able fly in one direction and end up back where it started. If the earth was flat, then how would it be possible? If the plane kept flying in a straight line wouldn't it end up in space?
Bonus laugh is the "snow globe" thingy they have that just shows the ocean falling off the edge of the earth. If all the water was falling off the edge, how do we have a tide?
But I agree with Quietust, in that it's got to be more of a 10 seconds of fame thing than anything else.

This community is really old by internet standards. I remember at some point in the past discovering their forums and debating with them trying to argue logic. It then struck me that the only possible explanation is that they were defending an absurd idea just to excercise arguing skills. Some sort of debate challenge. At least I think that's how it started, but then came in some people who actually believe the earth is flat.
Here's a post from 2007 I replied to. Sadly the 3D images I created are lost. https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/for ... #msg220975
