Heck, if a C64@985 kHz can do a four-channel sample playback (PolyTracker), then why shouldn't NES be capable of it?tepples wrote:SoD 2 is the minimal example of this, but imagine if the Ninja Gaiden or Vice: Project Doom cut scenes had some approximation of Amiga style music.

PollyTracker, bah.
Do you also know where to find tunes? My own tracking skills and patience leave a lot to desire.
Pretty cool program, although not that useful in practice since it doesn't support the normal hardware channels at all, and I can't imagine any reason why you'd want to sacrifice all three hardware channels for just four low-quality software ones. So it's more or less a show-off program, which might explain the lack of tunes made with it. It'd be a really cool tool if it was extended with hardware channel support and effects though, even if it would mean reducing the software channels by one or two.

On the other hand, the C-64 has badlines at every 8th scanline, which leave just about 20 cycles for the programmer to use. And like I expected, Polly Tracker switches to a blank screen as soon as you start playing your tune on all four software channels. But then the C64 could update VRAM at any time, allowing music playback to be more effectively interleaved with UI updates.

Most of them if not all are also available as sids on HVSC. And, umm, dirty64 is better than 80% of my module collection (and I do have *a lot* of them). That alone justifies PollyTracker existance.
