About the RockNES 20th anniversary - join in.
Yup, this november, RockNES will celebrate its 20th anniversary. I work on this project since 1998.
Well, I invite you to join the celebration with... gifts. The main idea is hiding gifts into the emulator, such as a built-in secret game (if you can provide something written in C for compiling with MinGW), or a single wallpaper, a NES demo... or even a message from #nesdev guys regarding the project.
Anything is welcome. What do you think?

Congrats! I have no idea where I would start in writing an emulator, and you've managed to keep one alive for 20 years, that's crazy!
So, I see no replies to this topic yet, so I'll say what was on my mind. Honestly, I kind of feel like bundling the emulator download with parallel data could be something the users wouldn't really want (a bigger download when all they want is the emulator).
For an emulator I can't really think of anything better for a gift than a free game. Since you're willing to part with the bandwidth required to upload extra things, why not make a built-in option in the emulator to download from a select list of homebrew games? Then people here could give the ok for you to include their homebrews on the list.

You could make a menu option "Download Games" that fetches the first three volumes of Action 53 from a website. That'd require only including an HTTPS client in your application.

Congrats on 20 years! I've only been at it for 4, and honestly can't see myself doing it for another 16! (but hey, who knows) Having a small NES demo/game themed for the 20th anniversary hidden in there somewhere definitely sounds like a neat little idea (I'm clueless about nes game development though, so I can't offer anything there :p)
I've actually been pondering adding something like this for months (e.g having a listing of homebrews with a screenshot, description, download button, etc.), but having to reach out to dozens of devs to try and see if they'd be interested has more or less been the reason I haven't. (and enough off-topic from me, don't want to hijack the thread!)tepples wrote:You could make a menu option "Download Games" that fetches the first three volumes of Action 53 from a website. I'm sure you could get a handful of music developers who would love for you to showcase their music if you want to include hidden tunes.
As for anything from me... you can do anything with Russian Roulette. It's open source.
On a side note: has there ever been an emulator that saves high scores to an online database? That could be a pleasant "gift" to some people. No?
Also congrats on 20 years! 1 more year and RockNES can get wasted. Edit: Or is it 18 in Brazil?

Yes, there's at least two emulators that are meant for online competition. Let me see if I remember their names... One was browser only, and the other was a downloaded file.
The downloaded one is ubernes http://www.ubernes.com/
I'm under the "FODA" alias on the ubernes leaderboards http://www.ubernes.com/current-player-rankings.html
The browser one is on retrouprising http://retrouprising.com/

AVS has online scores, though it's not an emulator per se.
Re: About the RockNES 20th anniversary - join in.
Online features are discarded, unfortunately.
I'm waiting for "gifts" submissions.

What do you mean? If that's the case, Windows would be already wasted.Jedi QuestMaster wrote:Also congrats on 20 years! 1 more year and RockNES can get wasted. Edit: Or is it 18 in Brazil?

He meant drink a lot of alcohol! 21 is the age in the US. In Brazil it's... Whatever. You can't sell it to minors but they all do and god knows they all drink a lot in parties and get wasted.
