Apparently they recently sold it to a marketing company who immediately inserted URL logging and stuff into the plugin to gather marketing data.
I am not sure why you mention this now, though.

IRC also does not require any special software to use; this was part of the design of IRC, to work without needing to install any special software (although it still helps to have special software for IRC, it is not strictly required). All of the others do need software.

Re: IRC vs. Skype/Slack/Discord vs. forums
Can you clarify what you mean by "special software"? At least in the case of Slack and Discord, they can be accessed with a web browser.
Re: IRC vs. Skype/Slack/Discord vs. forums
Slack and Discord require special proprietary software written in JavaScript to run inside the browser, as opposed to a documented protocol widely implemented by third-party client developers. Slack used to have an official bridge to IRC but shut it down. See "The JavaScript Trap" by Richard Stallman.

I discovered Ripcord a few weeks ago and it's a much better client for Discord. (Still has all the server-side Discord issues, but at least the client is nicer.)

I have no idea what Slack and Discord even are. I could do some research before posting, but since I'm lazy I decided to ask you guys if this is something I should be looking into in the first place... Are these relevant to our hobby in any meaningful way?
Re: IRC vs. Skype/Slack/Discord vs. forums
They're proprietary persistent text chat services. On Discord, there's a NESdev "server" (set of channels with a shared membership) run by someone named Kaydus.

Slack also has a documented messaging API: https://api.slack.com/rtmtepples wrote:Slack and Discord require special proprietary software written in JavaScript to run inside the browser, as opposed to a documented protocol widely implemented by third-party client developers. There are plugins for some chat clients such as WeeChat: https://github.com/wee-slack/wee-slack
tokumaru: They're proprietary chat applications. Slack is targeted for team communication (e.g., in software development), Discord is targeted more towards gamers. Not relevant whatsoever for NES development, unless a community forms in one of these.
