Yeah, it's the same thing every time. They always say to have some emergency kit but most people don't so when an earthquake comes supermarkets becomes empty in no time. Water gets hard to buy and other essentials too. I remember in 2011, it was a 5 in Tokyo and the building shook for 3~4 minutes. It was hell, the biggest I ever experienced. No train, all roads blocked by traffic but still electricity.

As for aftershocks, for a big one like that, it will be continuing for months. It can be quite nerve racking for a while.

Heh I knew I should be more prepared for these things, but I thought powerful earthquakes and typhoons seldom reach Hokkaido (I did keep a supply of instant food but I happened to eat most of it before the quake). I'm more careful nowdays though.
