Didn't see a thread so here's this news article... ... sole-leak/

Apparently it include some verilog and firmware code, which could be very useful to emulator devs. I guess for the sake of the site, nobody should share links or talk about actually downloading this.

Dolphin has made a statement. They're afraid to even look at it, because it would break the legal basis for their project.

For I, will never resort to ninty SDK/licensed program code resources of any sorts as some kind of guidance. There is enough info available in the internet to build apps/games for older platforms, even more nowadays because of the open source code. As for reverse engineering things, I guess it's true what they say "somebody will stare at these somewhere, then pass the word around", but I'm not one of these as I would rather waste 1 week researching stuff then writing down these findings. (:

Besides the legal aspect, I feel "replicating" a finished program is meaningless. Open source code is way better because if you manage to add some cool feature others can benefit from it also it has some kind of license benefits.

But on closed source platforms programming (being about 90% of all of us here) at some point somebody did that I guess.

Also there is the possibility of hardware timing hacks made in official code which would work in hardware, yet be difficult to recreate in emulators so in the end that work will have to be done nonetheless, and I think laws protect us in these fields (reverse engineering, for educational, hobby purposes)

Whatever source code in this leak probably isn't much more useful for N64 and Wii emulation than what emu devs already know. There's even a good chance the programmer comments and naming conventions would create more trouble just figuring out the code than it's worth.

When you apply to big gaming companies like Nintendo, I wonder if they ask about your attitude to emulation (kind of like how retailers will ask what you think of prosecuting shoplifters).

Screenshots of it show Nintendo used CVS as far back as the N64. That's a pleasant surprise, source code management in an industry known for losing its sources.

Source code control was used back as far as the dark ages where possible, on a team you need to use it. Even if it was Emily and you gave her a disk each day. However once the servers get offline or the history is purged as nobody is going to go back to the source code, and we need the HDD space on the server, it doesn't help "preserve the source code".
