(all posts subject to deletion from thread except this one)

I'm not sure what's going on exactly, but I'm pretty certain there haven't been any negative comments directed to/from anyone at least on this site's forum (and I'd prefer it to stay that way of course).

Sorry, I normally don't edit and delete posts (I believe in freedom of expression and all that). But you'll have to understand, and take this discussion to a more appropriate place.

Heh, no there was a little personal dispute between a couple people just in this thread. It has no bearing here, and is settled AFAIC.

Oh, was it another Nintendo Entertainment System versus Sega Master System dispute? We all know the true winner there :D

Similarities
64 sprites each 8x8 or 8x16 pixels, 8 per scanline. VRAM in its own address space.

Pro-Sega
SMS's PPU (TMS9929A, based on TMS 9918) had more colors per tile than the Ricoh 2C02 used in the NES. To support more colors, it was connected to more tile VRAM (16 KB vs. the 8 KB of UNROM and MMC1). Compare
Sonic the Hedgehog for SMS to its NES port to see the difference:
Image Image

SMS had more work RAM on deck (8 KB vs. NES's 2 KB).

Pro-Nintendo
NES had a more versatile sound chip than the TI SN76489 used in the SMS. The 2A03 tone generators ccould go at least an octave lower (two octaves lower in the case of channel 3), and it had multiple waveforms for tone generators channels 1 and 2 and a dedicated PCM channel.

Nintendo had more aggressive marketing, even to the point of being found anticompetitive in a court of law.

Heheh, there should be an NES vs SMS demo coding competition sometime, that would be fun.

NES has the advantage in raw CPU power.

I remember getting in heated fights over NES for SMS back in 1st grade :) It surely wasn't logical or based on any kind of facts back then. Of course the NES has always been my personal favorite, but good gamers these days just buy every console.

Heh, too bad I missed out on that. I only knew one person back then who had an SMS, NES pretty much dominated around here. It's not too easy to find one today either (I'm looking for one).

The SNES vs. Genesis arguments though were pretty nuts, heheh. I remember being on the Prodigy BBS in 1993 or so, that's practically all people were talking about in the video game forums.
