If you want to see some truly "l33t skillz" in SMB1, watch this movie...

Are these tricks possible because of a buggy emulator, or are they possible on a real NES? I have a video called "SMB God Techniques" or something similar, and it obviously exploits bugs in the emulator. Similarly for one of the Legend of Zelda speed runs... not only are some of the tricks impossible on a real NES, the emulator used was so bad that there were numerous graphical glitches not present on a real NES.

One thing you can do on some emulators is press 2 directions at once (like left+right). This can cause all kinds of weird stuff in some games. So there are some tricks that are possible on NES, but not on the controller.

Tool Assisted Console Game Movies (Nesvideos) is a really cool place. There are two good documents on the
why and how and a glossary that cover how they are done and emphasize that they can theoretically be played back on a real NES merely by feeding it the same controller input from the movie.
