Zelda 2 "Microchip" shortage was a hoax?

Post by drk421 »

Does anyone remember the reason big N said that Zelda 2 was delayed due to a microchip shortage?

We all know that Zelda 2 is a MMC1, (SKROM to be exact), which used a 128KB PRG ROM and 128KB CHR ROM.

MMC1 was pretty common, in most every game at the time. The 128KB mask roms and the CIC were probably also very common, so I don't see any reason this could be delayed due to a chip shortage.

Maybe Punch-Out which was the only one that used a "MMC2/4" could be delayed to to a shortage.

It's possible that a lot of MMC1 games were being released at the time (rather than an assortment of MMC1 and UNROM/CNROM), and that they didn't have enough of them in stock. Another possible issue is that Zelda 2 also used a battery-backed 8KB RAM chip for storing saved games.
