If that's all you want, you could load an emulator onto any Android gaming tablet by JXD, such as the S5110.

Very similar to the OP, an android device with an emulator just doesn't thrill me quite like an unknown $30 media player that inexplicably also plays NES roms :) Thanks for the links, I appreciate it. I'm not actually going to purchase any of them. I was just quite impressed by the media player thing and it's total randomness.

There are also several cheap chinese phones that play NES ROMs out of the box.

It also requires a phone that can be downgraded to Android 4.1.x or earlier because Android 4.2 and later have changed their Bluetooth stack to be incompatible with the Wii Remote.

I'll probably stick with FPGA I think. It should not be very expensive an might be under $50. But it's gonna be fun :)
