5B VRC6 VRC7 MMC5 PCB photos and component readouts

Post by rainwarrior » Thu Sep 13, 2018 2:26 pm

Since lidnariq started referring to apparently unknown capacitor values in my 5B amplifier thread, I thought it might be a good time to finally try to open my Famicom carts. I managed to open 3 of them, but at least 1 tab was broken on each of them (ouch). Was trying the "quick grip" method, but it really didn't help much for these. The MMC5 carts actually use screws (6 notches in a circular head), which worked with a screwdriver head I previously had for taking apart an SNES. Couldn't even manage to get my Rolling Thunder N163 open despite applying quite a bit of force, and it's a little beat up (a bunch of chips and scratches indicates someone else tried first...). My Erika to Satoru no Yumebouken N163 has glue filling some holes in the side of the shell (once again someone has beat me to it) so I'm not even going to try in that one.

I took some quick photos, but I'll link to the bootgod database where the photos are better. These boards don't seem to differ from the ones there. If there's any questions you'd like me to answer while I have these apart (I'm not doing this again) I'm going to keep them out for a few days before I put them back together. (e.g. if you'd like me to test continuity with a multimeter).

Anyway, here's Gimmick:

5B Gimmick! (bootgod)

C1: {R} / 85°C / M4413 / 6.3 v / 47 µF (top left)
C2: 103 (top right, 10nF)
C3/C4: 85°C / (M) / 228 / 50 v / 1 (top middle, does not say µF after 1)

R1: 10 x 100 5% (right top, brown black orange gold)
R2: 10 x 1k 5% (right bottom, brown black red gold)
R3: 10 x 10k 5% (middle, brown black yellow gold)

Just like resistor codes. 103 = 10·10³. Base unit is pF, so 103 = 10nF
rainwarrior wrote:C?: 82 (middle)
That's "just" 82pF.

So, for Gimmick: (R1//R2 · C3) = 909Ω·1µF → 175Hz.
That's ... not right. Maybe the 5B has a significant output impedance which moves the corner frequency down.

MMC5 EKROM Just Breed (bootgod)
MMC5 ELROM Uchuu Keibitai SDF (bootgod)

Doesn't seem necessary to read these out, so I won't. Each value is readable from the colours or printed on the board. The one electrolytic capacitor on each board is 22µF 6.3V which is also indicated on the board underneath it.

Some of the chip markings which are hard to read in the photos, if they're interesting to anybody:

EKROM CHR: EFC-15-0 CHR / UPD23C2013ACZ-W81 / 9245XD003
EKROM PRG: EFC-15-0 PRG / UPD23C4013ACZ-W44 / 9246XY001
EKROM MMC5: 9123AA032

ELROM CHR: HAL-UI-0 CHR / RP231039D / 1001 / OGF 41
ELROM PRG: HAL-UI-0 PRG / RP231039D / 1000 / OGF 42
ELROM MMC5: 9006AA057

Again, let me know if there's anything you'd like to know about these. At least the MMC5 ones are very easy to open and close.

i've been trying to figure out the mmc5 caps so i can order some but i don't know how to read those. i know most of them are labelled 104 on the board. can you walk through decoding one?

It's standard resistor color codes, although the tolerances might be slightly different from resistor tolerances?

Brown Black Yellow White = 1049 = 10×10 pF ... and white= ±10%

So 100nF = 0.1µF. Probably needs to be nonpolarized?

thanks. the references i find usually have 5 bands with the other one being temp as the first band. since these only have 4 bands does that mean temp is excluded? or how does that work?

Yeah, they neither tell you voltage rating nor tempco.
