Famicom Disk System articles (Kaizou Manual) and FD3206 hack

Post by philpem »

Hi guys,
A couple of years ago, a set of Edonkey links for a translated version of volume 3 of "Famicom Kaizou Manual" (aka "Famicom Remodeling Manual") were posted here:
http://nesdev.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=6 ... c&start=45
(see the first post on that page). I've been on ed2k all morning and haven't seen a single person with this file (searching by Filehash and file name, restarting the search every so often). Figator suggests that the file still exists on ed2k (albeit with only one or two sources), it's just that I'm not seeing it...

They were also (at one point) available from http://simplynes.emucamp.com/copytool.html.

I'm doing some work on a magnetic disc analyser / data recovery system, and would rather like to have a look at these files. Does anyone still have a copy of them lying around?

Also, there's a reference on TomyWeb (http://www.tototek.com/tomyweb/) to a hack for the copy-protection in the FD3206 head driver chip. I found a few obscure references (with Google) that suggest the "hack" uses an ICT PEEL18CV8 (specifically, here: http://nesdev.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/sh ... anded&sb=3), but couldn't find anything else. Does anyone have any further details on this?

Thanks,
Phil.

The 16V8 is a generic programmable logic chip. In the scan from the Kaizou manual there's a discrete mod circuit to restore disk writing, it's likely Tomy's 16V8 implements nothing more than that circuit. If you don't need the translated version, I believe the archive Tomy uploaded to Nesdev has it.

Yeah, I've seen the untranslated images (fdscopy and fdscopy2) but the PCB images for the tap-off points are pretty poor, and there a few Japanese comments on the circuit diagrams.

I'd rather like to know what those comments say...

I think it's pretty clear apart from the head pins, but since they're differential I guess it doesn't matter. There are only two possibilities though on how to wire them. The logic could also be better.

I know I have Rob's translation somewhere, if I can find it I'll upload those pages.

I know I'm late to the game, but just so the doc stays in as many hands as possible, if this thread is ever googled or whatever, I just want all to know if they ever need this doc again, simply PM me or write me at rbudrick at hotmail dot com.

So tell us more about this magentic analyser you are working on...

Here's a link to my translation, since some requested it.

Yes, I still have them. I uploaded this one here, at least temporarily:

Not sure how useful the other files are, but I have those too. I can't open .doc files, but going by the filenames it's probably the same document.

Thanks! I would be interested in the others as well. I've been having a lot of fun digging through different Japanese magazines.
