Acclaim 51555 PCB compatibility

Post by nintendo2600 »

Hey All,

Been a while since I posted here but I knew this was the place to go for my question. I'm wondering is the Acclaim 51-555 PCB (TK-ROM MMC3 CLONE) pin for pin correct with a standard EPROM or does it need some address lines rerouted like on a real TKROM nintendo brand board?

Thanks in Advance,
Shawn

I'm 99% sure it is pin standard for EPROMs, like most non-Nintendo made boards. The only exepction seems to be some USA Konami boards which are like Nintendo's, while Japanese Konami boards uses standard EPROMs pinout.
Useless, lumbering half-wits don't scare us.

Bregalad to rescue as normal. Looks like things are all the same still here at NesDev! Thanks man! :)

I apologize for bringing this back from the dead, but I was curious if there was any 100% confirmation on this?

I ask because I have socketed my Roger Clemens PCB (with the 51555-2 board) and have been unsuccessful in my attempts to get a standard 27c020 to boot.

Thanks!

Solved this myself, and the above information is correct, the PCB is a direct drop in EPROM replacement.

This rings true of all U.S. Acclaim PCB's? Sounds like I've got a new favorite platform for test cartridges!

Also confirmed. I had Mortal Kombat running on this:

That brings things full circle: a pirate 8-bit port of a game to which Acclaim held the 16-bit port rights, running on an Acclaim board.

Not as perfect as I thought. PRG works perfectly, CHR has corruption. the tiles are THERE, but all messed up.

Those pcb lines break really easy as those boards are VERY low quality. I'd check your connections on the chr lines and\or reburn your chr chip.

Bit of a L8L8L8 bump. But I just re-did it with a newer PCB.

Turns out, the 5155 PCB's with the Nintendo MMC3 -ARE- wired for EPROMs.

The 5155's with the cloned MMC3 are wired for EPROMs on the PRG, but the CHR side still needs some rewiring.

Just played Bio Force Ape on my shiny new test cart!

Sorry to necrobump, but do you happen to have any more information on this? I have a few of these boards and would love to put them to some use.

On 53361-2 (MC-ACC), I can get it to boot a game, but the CHR side is corrupt. I have no issues with 51555-2 (MMC3B). Both are Roger Clemens MVP donors.

I'm using one 27C020 each for CHR and PRG (Mega Man 5), with 256k files in each. Some of the graphics and text look fine, but some are corrupt. I've read that this PCB may be compatible with 27C101, and the only difference (from what I can tell) is pin 30 on a 27c101 is NC whereas it's A17 on a 27c020.

The other thing I noticed is that anything using the ACCLAIM-MC-ACC maxes out at 384Kb combined (the PRG+CHR I'm using is 512Kb). Could this have anything to do with it?

The first obvious difference I noticed was:

53361-2: pin Q0 (Eprom 13) -> cart pins 34 (CIC toPak) & 30 (PPU D0)
51555-2: pin Q0 (Eprom 13) -> cart pin 30 (PPU D0) only

53361-2: CIC pin 2 -> cart pins 34 (CIC toPak) & 30 (PPU D0)
51555-2: CIC pin 2 -> cart pin 34 (CIC toPak)

I matched up the wiring (as best I could) on the 53361-2 to match the 51555-2, but no change. PRG seems to work, but tiles are still missing from the CHR.

Any help is appreciated!

edit: I tried using Bonk's Adventure (another MMC3 TLROM) and same issue. It mostly works, but some tiles are missing. Is there any way to know if the issue is MC-ACC boards are trash or if it's the fact that I'm using 27C020 EPROMs? I may have some 27C101s to test with..?
