Hardware - emulator discrepancy: super ghouls n ghosts

Post by fred »

I already posted this on the snesdev discord, but figured i'd post in on a more static part of the internet.

Super Ghouls n Ghosts has a rare bug that sometimes makes the game play the wrong music or sound effects. Happens on the JP version (chou makaimura), can't say for certain it happens on the US version... I think it does though. Examples:
death jingle: https://www.twitch.tv/emptysys/clip/Ale ... entSleeper
credits music in stage 2: https://www.twitch.tv/nmetv/clip/Inquis ... tterPupper
random crossbow sound https://clips.twitch.tv/SlickTardyDotterelPicoMause

This has to our (ghouls series community) knowledge never happened on any emulator - snes9x, bizhawk(bsnes) or higan. Untested on mesen-S since it's so recent.

The big problem here is of course it's 1) uncommon and 2) unknown how to replicate. I'm not expecting others to start looking into it and all that, I just wanted to post it as this is the only higan - HW difference that i've personally come across.

Abrupt end of post here as I don't really have anything else to say, haha.

Likely a bug in their sound driver, no emulator emulates the communication channel race conditions. I hit a bug like that in GSS, only happened on hw, details on this forum.

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's one of the earlier snes games and has a lot of wonky stuff under the hood haha.

Here's another fun one. Noticed mesen-S would draw a line of garbage on the stage 3 boss, never seen this in higan so did some digging. Compiled a list of screenshots from real HW as the player walks into the boss trigger: https://imgur.com/a/83Pusr3
This bug appears to happen somewhat often, but only for certain players. Could possibly be model specific? I don't know these things well enough to say. Does not seem to happen on the snes jr, only some older models. But yeah, don't take my word on that, haha.
