I'm not going to lie, this scared the crap out of me when I visited the site just now. :P

(Took a few seconds to realize I was at the right place and that it was just a phpBB upgrade)

Also, whoa, a phpBB upgrade!

After a few days of getting used to the dark theme, I'm actually quite fond of it. Working correctly on mobile is a big advantage over the old theme.

If this was up to me, I'd probably just tweak the color scheme and the icons a bit so as to not completely abandon the old identity, but the new layout brought a lot of improvements that I feel are very welcome.

Totally agree. I like it.

I agree with Tokumaru, just lose the black bg on the NesDev logo on the header and make the dark theme the default one, everything else is completely fine.
This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit.

You can change to a dark theme in the user settings, but that won't quite restore it. Another thing you can do is User CSS (set it up in your web browser; you may need an extension). I have made many changes on my own computer, so that more stuff will fit on the screen at once, and other stuff.

However, I think NNTP would be better.

Or just change the rule in the style to specify "background: black !important" instead of "background: #242a36 !important;"

I'm not sold on it. Nostalgia aside, it still does some weird things, like providing only a narrow scrollable window into a large chunk of code instead of just displaying the whole chunk inline.

Things like that can probably be solved with quick CSS patches (in this case, just removing the "max-height" from code boxes might be enough).

When I move the mouse arrow across hyperlinks in upper / lower screen area, I am getting a blank lines inserted/removed here and there (eg. below New Topic button), so parts of the screen scroll up/down just when moving the mouse arrow. Don't know if that happens in newer browsers, too?

On an android tablet (newer browser, but without mouse), there's some flicker at the bottom when scrolling the page up. I think that's some intended effect that darkens the lower screen area to indicate scrolling, but the darkened area itself gets scrolled, causing the flicker.

Without java script, the Quick links drop down appears relative fast (when moving the mouse on it). With java script it requires a manual mouse click, and then takes almost a second until the drop down appears.

Most of that is probably a feature of the newer software update and not fixable in bare config files.

For the nesdev logo with the current (and/or old) color scheme, a transparent background color might be better than hardcoding it to black or gray.

The screen width looks more or less okay to me. Long lines can be really harder to read than shorter ones. The exception would be a CODE table with many columns, there it would make sense to use as much of the screen width as possible...

Code: Select all

1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890 1234567890
What I do like is that windows with less than 720pix width are automatically dropping unneccessary stuff like avatars (don't remember if the old software did support that, too).

Btw. is the sticky co-location thread still needed, viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18738 ?

YEAH, the dark theme rocks !
It should be the default, though.

Also the reversal of preview/submit button is still confusing. I guess I'll get used to it eventually...
FitzRoy wrote: Thu Nov 21, 2019 7:42 pm Websites rarely do this, though they do usually fill blank space with navbars and ads. It makes reading harder to span full width.
Definitely, but it could take more than only half of the screen. Taking 75% of the width would be a good compromise, and wouldn't make anything hard to read. Only using 90% or more will make reading hard I suppose.
